Project Overview
In this section you will outline the aim of the project/task and give an
overview of the activates you undertook to complete it.
What was the theme of your project and
what attracted you to it?
The theme of my project was a travel documentary about Yorkshire. I was attracted
to it because I wanted to make a video project for this year's FMP, despite not
doing one all of Year 2, I felt like I could make a better project in Premiere Pro, so I
settled with this idea. I wanted to do the theme of this because it is a local area to
where I live and it would be accessible to film, I felt like doing a travel documentary
would've been interesting because I've watched some of them before going on
holiday, or away to places to see what's there and what it looks like, so I thought I'd
make one for where I live.
What research did you undertake and how did
it help develop your project?
I did lots of research in this project especially in audience research, market
research, and production research. In audience research, I did a survey for answers
from my target audience and sent it out to them, and researched their
demographics, psychographics, geographics and behaviorals. I then made audience
profiles for my primary and secondary target audiences. Next, I did market
research, this included existing products, and analyzed them for any common
themes and how they are made. For production research, I did another survey
which linked to my audience research however it was for the topic of my
production, and how it is made. I also did lots of research on camera angles,
movements, focuses, etc. It helped my projecta lot because by the end of this, I
was ready to start planning my work.
How did you develop and improve your ideas
throughout the project?
At first, my ideas for this project was quite brief. I knew what I wanted to do and
my purpose for it, but I changed my mind a lot on the locations and my layout of
the documentary, but after research, I had a good idea of how my documentary
will look and how I will make it.
What was the outcome of the project/task?
The outcome was an 8-minute documentary about different areas in Yorkshire to
promote travel and tourism here.
Personal Response
This section will explore your thoughts and feelings about the
experience. This will help gain a understand of how your personal
feelings may have impacted the final outcome.
How did you feel about the project before you
started?
I was ready to start my FMP, after the last project I wanted to start my FMP so I can
do my own idea. However, coming up with the idea was difficult because I changed
my idea several times. Originally, I wanted to do a music magazine, then I wanted
to do a documentary, so I settled with my idea of a travel documentary for
Yorkshire. When I got started on my project my ideas kept developing and
expanding for this project.
What do you think about your project development
and how did it help you to refine your idea?
My project developed a lot more around the research time and during pre-
production, I came up with more ideas on how it should look like and what else I
should include.
Did you collaborate on your project or engage
contributors, etc?
I didn’t collaborate on this project because I didn't do an interview. I did the writing
work and filming, however my parents helped by helping me drive to each location
so I can film.
How did you feel when the project was completed
and why?
I felt glad the project was completed, because I did a lot of work in the last few
weeks for this FMP and did a lot in the last week. However I am glad with my
work.
Evaluating the project
In the previous sections, you have been commenting upon the project development. The
evaluation may include some similar information, but it will also include critical comment.
An evaluation must include information about the good and bad points of the project and it
is important to be honest. Finally, you should make a judgment about the effectiveness of
the success of the project
What were the good points about the project/task and
what did you learn from them? [try and think of at least 3,
more if possible]
The good point was the researching because I learned a lot and did a lot of work
and spent a lot of time on it, another one was my filming, I feel like I did well with
the camera angles and locations, and also editing. I did my editing over 4 weeks, I
learnt more Premiere Pro skills by doing this.
What challenges did you face and how did you
respond to them? Try and think of at least 3...
One challenge was the weather on some filming days, it started raining and had to
protect the equipment by using the bags and lens caps. Another one was the
camera was quite blurred in shots, because the camera is mainly used for photos
and not fast paced videos. Another challenge was the audio on my documentary,
as I recorded the script and it didn't sound clear, which could be because I
recorded it on my phone and not using specialist equipment.
How would you rate the final piece? [think along the lines
of poor, satisfactory, good or excellent...justify your rating]
I would rate this final piece good. I am happy with my work from pre-production,
production and post-production as a lot of my work from planning and researching
is backed up in my documentary. I think my research was very successful as I spent
a lot of time on it.
How did you design appeal to your target audience?
I made my design appeal to my target audience by the use of audience research
and surveys. I looked at locations they wanted and different parts of the
documentary that would appeal to them and put them in my final product.
Analysis
In this section, you will focus on the details of the project and make
sense of what happened in the project. You should demonstrate how
your decisions informed the project development and the success of the
outcome.
In what ways was the overall project a success?
It was a success because I learnt a lot from it and focused a lot more on the writen
work and pre-production work this time which is what I didn't do as well in the
other projects. I also am happy with how the end product turned out so I am glad I
did this for my FMP. I have also gained more skills in Premiere Pro and in media,
especially using more equipment this time.
What elements did not go well and why?
Some elements that didn't go well was the time management, I'd spend too long
on one specific part and wouldn't have time for another. For example, I did several
weeks on research, so I didn’t have as much time to write out my planning, this
wasn't a big problem though because I already knew what planning I wanted to do
for this documentary. Another element was the audio and script, because it was 8
minutes split between the intro, and 4 different locations, I couldn't go into detail
on each location and had to be briefer. This meant my documentary was mainly
focused on the video clips and how it looked, more than being very informative.
Also, the drone I bought had lots of issues meaning I couldn't use it. The camera
was very slow and blurry; therefore, it wouldn't look good compared to the rest of
my documentary as it would've had random slow and blurred ariel videos which I
feel like wouldn't have made my project better.
How did your skills develop during the portfolio?
[remember, skills aren't just technical, remember things
like organisation, time management, communication]
My skills definitely developed in my ideas throughout the project, and also skills in
using the equipment too. My time management skills however did improve by the
end because I managed to finish all my work and upload it all before the deadline.
What meaning and messages did you want
to convey and were you successful?
I wanted to convey the meaning of advertising the area in a documentary style and
I think I was successful by having good shots and also some information too, and as
it was 8 minutes long, it wasn't just advert based.
What feedback did you get from your peers and viewings?
Common feedback I got was that I got good shots of the locations and people
thought it looked good and would consider going there, which was the purpose of
my documentary. I also got some feedback on the camera quality being blurry
which was understandable because it was in some shots that weren't as focused
and was fast paced.
What would you do differently in the future and why?
I would do a different idea if I did it next time. I liked my idea and thought it was
interesting however I feel like there are other topics that I've done projects on
already, like music, films or even cars, that I feel like I would've had more
knowledge on and done more for it if I did it for my FMP. I also would've spent
more time filming in the areas but because I didn't have lots of time outside of
college to film, I had to spend 2 full days doing it, but if I had more time I would
spend more time in the places and get more footage.
What knowledge have you gained that would help you in
the future to improve your project? Also, what knowledge
from academic literature, professionals has helped, why?
I have gained skills on Adobe Creative Cloud like Premiere Pro and also have gained
more skills using equipment. I also gained lots of marketing experience in research
with audience research, market research and appealing to my target audience
which will benefit me in the future as marketing is the career path I want to go
down after college.
Action Plan
This section will identify what you would do differently in the future and
identify ways you could develop.
If you were making a similar project in the
future, what would you do differently?
How could you develop your skills for future projects?
Please identify the appropriate resources and courses. For
example, webpages, tutorials, books, short courses and
qualifications.
What personal attributes could you develop to
ensure you are working at a professional level?

Finally, you should make a judgment about the effectiveness of the success of the project

I think my research was very successful as I spent a lot of time on it.
