Older Investors Summit
Strengthening Financial Security for Older Americans
2. 2 IRI Older Investors Summit 2015
Anti-Trust Policy and Caution
As members of a trade association, each person attending this function must be mindful of the constraints imposed by federal
and state anti-trust laws. The people here today represent companies that are in direct competition with one another. IRI’s
purpose is to provide a forum for the free exchange of ideas on the designated topics. It is not the purpose of this meeting to
reach any agreement that could have anti-competitive effects. Individuals must keep in mind that a violation of the anti-trust
laws may subject them to substantial fines – or worse. You can avoid problems by following these simple guidelines:
• Stick to the published agenda.
• Be cautious about discussions involving pricing, premiums, benefits to be offered or terminated, and who should or should
not be covered. The Justice Department views these types of discussions with concern and suspicion. Never take a poll of
participants’ positions or make a collective agreement on these issues.
• Always retain your right to make an independent judgment on behalf of your company. IRI is dedicated to assisting each of
its members in achieving their competitive potential.

Dear Colleague,
On behalf of the IRI Board of Directors, welcome to the IRI Older Investors Summit: Strengthening Financial Security for Older Americans.
We are delighted to have you join us as we explore the issues of diminished capacity and financial elder abuse with financial services
industry leaders, nationally recognized academics, as well as policymakers and regulators.
The population of people aged 65 and older is one of the fastest growing cohorts in the United States. The U.S. Census Bureau projects that
this group will nearly double in size by 2050 – largely as a result of aging Baby Boomers – increasing to nearly 84 million Americans. As this
group continues its record expansion, it will necessitate the availability of information for financial services professionals and consumers
regarding issues specific to older Americans.
As a result, IRI has compiled the best resources from nonprofit groups, regulators and government agencies to create a one-stop shop
focused on protecting older investors.
The IRI resource center on protecting older investors is available at IRIonline.org under our Research and Education section. Here you will
find a wide array of important information and educational materials including:
• Resources for consumers to protect against being the victim of financial abuse.
• An interactive map to find local resources to protect older consumers who may be the victim of financial elder abuse.
• Tip sheets for financial advisors on spotting signs of diminished capacity and financial elder abuse.
• Regulatory notices, guidance and reports for financial services firms on interacting with older clients.
But that is just the first step.
Through this Summit, IRI has brought together a powerful complement of advocates and stakeholders to help advance our collective
goals to protect older clients from financial harm. By working together to increase awareness and knowledge regarding financial elder
abuse, it is our objective to prevent it from occurring so that retirees can maintain a secure and dignified retirement.
Thank you again for your participation. We look forward to a dynamic and educational discussion.
Sincerely,
Catherine J. Weatherford
President and CEO
Insured Retirement Institute (IRI)

18. What’s better than an annuity
with a daily step-up option?
How about one with two.
Daily 6/Daily +4 cost 1.25% annually. The charge cannot exceed 2.50%. These optional benefit charges may increase upon any contract anniversary. If an increase is declined, the withdrawal
percentage will be decreased by 1% (ex.: 5% to 4%); however, market step-ups and Deferral Bonuses, if applicable will continue to be credited.
All guarantees are based on the claims-paying ability of Forethought Life Insurance Company and assume compliance with the benefit rules.
Variable annuities offer tax-deferral, professionally managed investment options and flexible payouts. Values will fluctuate with investment performance, and the annuity may gain or lose value.
Charges and fees will also reduce its value. Optional benefits are not available for purchase outside of a variable annuity and may be elected at an additional cost. A standard death benefit is
included in the base product. Suitability and willingness to purchase the variable annuity must be considered prior to the potential benefits of any optional features.
Taxable distributions (including certain deemed distributions) are subject to ordinary income taxes, and if made prior to age 591/2, may also be subject to a 10% federal income tax penalty.
Distributions received from a non-qualified contract before the Annuity Commencement Date are taxable to the extent of the income on the contract. Payments from IRAs are taxable in
accordance with the normal rules surrounding taxation of payments from an IRA. Early surrender charges may also apply. Withdrawals will reduce the death benefit and any optional guaranteed
amounts in an amount more than the actual withdrawal.
