2. THE TASK
For my client of BBC Three and BBC England I have to create a short
documentary for the Northern Voices Campaign surrounding the theme of
Culture in the Digital Age for our target audience of people aged 16-24 year
olds.
The purpose of this is to capture and portray the
culture of young people (like the people in our target
audience, and therefore they might relate to our
documentary) while showing the impact of new
technology on our young people and how culture
has changedbecauseof these new developments.
3. THE TASK
• For this task,BBC Englandand BBC Three have teamed up togetherand are
requestingus to make a short(roughly 15 minutes)documentary revolvingthe
theme of Culturein the Digital Age for BBC Three’s targetaudienceof 16-24
year olds. This documentarywill be put forward as partof the Northern
Voices Scheme.
• The purposeof the documentaryis to portraythe effectof the digitalage on
our modern societyand how it has effectedour youngpeople, specificallythe
peopleof our targetaudience’sage range as they have grew up in the digital
age and thereforehaven’tfully seen its effects.

5. CLIENT RESEARCH
BBC Three was founded by Stuart Murphy on the 9th of
February 2003, however was relaunched on the 1st of
February 2022. Originally BBC Three had a target audience of 24-35 year-olds
however over time this changed, ands their target audience got younger as they
started aiming their shows to young adults and teenagers. Although their
programmes tend reach to many ages, not just its target audience. The purpose
of this free to air digital television channel was to innovate and produce award
winning programmes. In 2007 BBC iPlayer was created and released so that
people could enjoy the BBC at any time and in February of 2016 however, BBC
Three becameonlineonly.

6. BBC Three was online only for 6 years, up until its relaunch in February of 2022
when they decided to return to linear television, now with a target audience of
roughly 16-25 year olds. BBC Three is a youth-orientated channel with around
90% of their output originate formthe UK.
They moved to online-only in 2016 due to budget cuts despite public opposition
however returned to BBC One on a late night strand on a Monday to Wednesday
in 2019.
BBC Three is the channel that replaced BBC Choice, both of
which were ran by Stuart Choice, who earned the title of
youngest channel controller in the country after launching
UK Play when he was 26.

7. In 2014 it was announced that BBC had to make cuts of
£100 million and therefore one of its television services
would have to be closed to help this measure, as a
result, BBC Three was no longer on the air and instead

its shows could be streamed at any time online. However with this major change
there was much backlash from their viewersand severalcelebrities.
After several years they decided to bring back BBC Three to a linear channel as
its content “now had the potential to reach a wider audience on a linear channel,
as well as the key demographic which will continue to watch online”. BBC Three
includes a range of genres including comedy, drama, documentaries, news and
sport, all specificallyaiming towards their younger targetaudience.
8. PURPOSE OF BBC THREE
The purpose of BBC Three is to bring younger audiences (specifically people
aged 16-34) high quality public service broadcasting through a mixed-genre
scheduleof innovative UK contentfeaturingnew UK talent.

many different ages (appeal to more than just its aimed targetaudience)
• The age of the target audience links to the theme of “Culture in the Digital
Age” because their target audience grew up with this technology or grew up
and don’t knowanything otherthan it or saw its development.

encouragethem to think about the impact of the

10. BBC NORTHERN VOICES CAMPAIGN
Together, BBC Three and BBC England are collaborating to launch a Factual
Development Scheme for the North of England called the Northern Voices. The
purpose of this campaign is to tell positive, young, unique, regional stories. BBC
want to give a platformto new young talents and to showtheir stories.
The target audience for this campaign is people aged 16-24 (same target
audience as BBC Three) and the subject for our documentary is “Culture in the
Digital Age”. The people who match the target audience age therefore will have
grown up with this new technology developing and therefore won’t fully know
the impact its causedon societyand our culture.

11. “MY CULTURE”
Culture definition: “the customary beliefs, social forms, and material traits of a
racial, religious, or social group” or the “the characteristic features of everyday
existence”
A person's culture can be impacted by many aspects of your life, some of which
are uncontrollable, some you get to decide for yourself. Their culture is made up
from their values, interests, life experiences, upbringing, habits, beliefs, hobbies,
interestsand the people that you surround yourself around.
Culture can also change, grow and develop, as suggested by “Culture in the
Digital Age”, showingthat as technology has developed,so has our culture.
