The document summarizes a student architecture project focused on urban densification and housing typology. It describes (1) studying two North American housing types - the plantation house and courtyard house - to create a new hybrid morphology, (2) exploring different ways to split and shift characteristics of the two types vertically and horizontally, and (3) applying the hybrid to a site in San Antonio, Texas with private ownership homes and co-housing units that make use of shared and private courtyards on multiple levels.

To Whom It May Concern:
“Architecture,
of all the arts, is the one which acts the most slowly, but the most surely, on the
soul” ~Ernest Dimnet
Perhaps not always recognized, the beauty of what is contained is enhanced by the
intentional design of the container itself. As a recent graduate from the University of
Michigan with a Bachelor of Science degree in Architecture, this is my passion, and I am
ready to use my degree to better my surrounding communities, both local and abroad. A
career should be about learning what you enjoy and finding a way to excel at it, and I am
more than ready for success.
Architecture is more than just a structure that serves any number of monotonous
purposes. It is the design of a building that will influence those who enter it because of the
experience they have while inside. Architecture is my passion and I’m ready to put my
knowledge to work. While working for Labtop Rendering I learned how to manage my time in a
fast paced environment, ask questions when I was unfamiliar with a particular process, and
produce a high quality product to the standards of major clients such as BIG and SOM. My
education has given me the ability to perform and teach drafting, 2D and 3D AutoCAD, as well
as use other programs such as Rhino, VectorWorks, Illustrator, and InDesign. I am a highly
efficient, motivated and positive team player, and insist on a high quality product. I have been a
dedicated and value-added employee in each position I have pursued and look forward to new
challenges.
I welcome the opportunity to discuss my qualifications and learn more about your hiring
plans. My skills in designing, conserving, and implementing initiatives would be a great asset
to your company’s strategic goals. Please contact me at your earliest convenience at

Vertical Farm: Tsz Yan Ng and Ellie Abrons Winter 2010
What Is A Wall?
When does a wall become
defined as a wall? Can a wall be
a floor at the same time? Can it
double as a moment of rest for
sitting or laying? Step one in
this studio was to study the idea
of defining a wall using what-
ever methods we could to argue
our point. Eventually,
gastronomy gets introduced
into the project, we study urban
organic farming, and the overall Space Study
goal is to design a vertical farm.
Wall Study
The first thought was to study
the vertical. A wall can be a
floor to ceiling wall at one level
but when elevation changes
and the wall stays stationary
the function of the wall has
range. A wall can be defined
by its thickness in the vertical,
but what about the horizontal?
So naturally my partner and I
incorporate a curve.

design decision to utilize the
curved wall, elevational
changes, and horizontal thick-

kitchen setting. By raising the Seating

Urban Farms
N
Chicago is a hustle and bustle
city yet there are urban farms all
over. Organic and non-organic
food is grown or transported in
from surrounding areas and sold
directly to services such as local
restaurants. The final task was to
compile each space study, and
given a site in Chicago, design a
structure that would work from
the ground up growing, selling,
distributing, and servicing the
food in one central hub.
Living Culinary
Restaurant Education
Hotel Market/Pop-Up
Site Plan
Final Design
Farmers Markets took place
below ground level with and
open front to the public. Growing
spaces spanned from below
ground level, climbing vertically,
inside and out, toward the sky.
Culinary displays were pushed to
the street for entertainment and
education, while all the food
could be bought and distributed
to the hotel and residential
spaces at the top of the structure.

Morphology and Urban Densification: Kennedy Winter 2011
Housing Typology
The single family home exists all Housing Type 1:
over the world in many different Plantation House
forms. The initial idea is to
research 2 North American
housing types. Investigating
their form, inhabitation, and
assembly it is possible to create
a new typology by morphing
the characteristics together. The
end result will be denisfying this
morphology to fit the urban
setting of San Antonio, Tx.
Plan Front Elevation Axon
Type Study
The plantation house and the
courtyard house, both uniquely
beautiful, are polar opposites Housing Type 2:
of one another. For example, in Courtyard House
the plantation the focus is
outward, allowing for approach
from any direction while the
courtyard house has an inward
focus with one linear approach
down the central axis.
