1. THE AMERICAN ELECTION: PERSONALITY V POLICIES
SESSION 3
GROUP ACTIVITY
Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton - WHO SAID IT?
Introduction
In an election, it is important to be sceptical. This means questioning and challenging
information. One way to be sceptical is to spot assumptions. An assumption is a
conclusion we make based on incomplete information. Assumptions can be either right or
wrong but it is really important to challenge them by researching and checking the facts.
Look at this picture and tell me what it would taste like if you ate it?
This activity will help you to spot common assumptions in the American election.
Assumptions are being made when:
â The media only show us some, not all, of what a candidate stands for.
â We read something from a long time ago and the candidate has changed their mind since then.
â Candidates say one thing to one group and a different thing to another group to persuade
them to vote.
What if I was to tell you that this was actually a soap that is shaped like fruit? Do you think
it would still taste the same? Most of us made the assumption that this was fruit but we
didnât have all the information so we were wrong about the taste!
2. THE AMERICAN ELECTION: PERSONALITY V POLICIES
SESSION 3
1. Read the introduction aloud and look at the image together.
2. Ask the club members to stand next to the candidate picture they would vote for.
Make a note of this and regroup.
3. Split your club into groups of three.
4. Put the cut-out quotes in the middle of the floor.
5. Ask each group in turn to take a quote, read it aloud and decide who they think said it.
They can have one minute to discuss the quote, then they have to move the quote to Hillaryâs
side of the room or Trumpâs side of the room. For each decision, ask the club members to give an
explanation for their choice.
Before the session you will need to:
â Print the session three activity
â Cut the quotes out
â Leave the âQuotes revealedâ sheet somewhere out of sight
â Stick up Clinton and Trump pictures on opposite sides of the room.
Prompt questions for students sitting on the fence:
â What policy or issue do you think this candidate is talking about?
â How does this candidate feel about this policy/issue?
â Why do you think Trump/Clinton is more likely to have said that?
GROUP ACTIVITY
INSTRUCTIONS
6. Once all the quotes have been moved, reveal who said what.
As each quote is revealed, ask the group what led them to make their decision. If they were right, ask
them why they think they made an assumption that turned out to be correct. If they were wrong, ask
them why they think they made the wrong assumption.
7. Ask your students again to stand next to the candidate they would vote for.
8. If there is a change since the first vote, ask them what made them change their mind.
CLOSING QUESTIONS:
1. Why is it important to challenge assumptions and be sceptical?
2. How can you make fewer incorrect assumptions?
3. How did this activity help you think about assumptions?
HUB TASK:
Go on the Hub and focus on what youâve learnt about this week. You could use the useful web links online
to research some of the quotes from today.

SESSION 3
I am, you know,
adamantly
against illegal
immigrantsâŠ
People have to
stop employing
illegal immigrants.
(On immigration)
You have to give
them a path and
you have to make
it possible for
them to succeed.
Every nation has
to either be with
us, or against
us. Those who
harbour terrorists,
or who finance
them, are going to
pay a price.
We have at least
11 million people that
came in illegally.
They will go out.
Some will come back,
the best, through a
process. They have to
come back legally.

We have to form a
partnership with our
Muslim communities,
we have Muslim
communities in this
country that are great
and we have to form
that partnership.
The wealthy and the well-
connected have had a
president the last 7 years,
and itâs time that the rest
of the US had a president
to work for you every
single day. We will have
a different approach
toward trade.
I have been
consistent and
committed to
comprehensive
immigration
reform with a path
to citizenship.
I think the big problem
this country has is being
politically correct. I
donât have time for total
political correctness. And
to be honest with you,
this country doesnât have
time either. This country
is in big trouble.

None of the people who
whine about the way I talk
to women mention the fact
that I voluntarily promoted
gender equality in a
male-dominated industry.
The women who have
worked for me will vouch
for the fact that I was as
demanding of them as I
was of their male
counterparts.
I am not giving in;
I am not giving up;
and Iâm not going
to start out leaving
15 million Americans
out of health care.
Human rights
are womenâs
rights, and
womenâs rights
are human
rights.
We have to
stop illegal
immigration.
Itâs hurting us
economically. Itâs
hurting us from
every standpoint.
