1. Film:The Damned United
Genre: Football Drama
Setting: Leeds 1974
Plot: Leeds United are the dominant force in English football under Don Revie and have won
the First Division and FA Cup. Despite their dominance and entertaining football, Leeds have
a poor disciplinary record and are hated by other fans. At the same time, England have failed
to qualify for the 1974 World Cup leading to the sacking of World Cup winning manager Alf
Ramsey. The film begins with the FA close to announcing what is believed to be Don Revie's
succession of Ramsey as England manager.
Sequence type: Black titles with white font at beginning with the chants of “Glory Leeds
United” in the background. Sequence is mostly consistent of footage of Leeds United matches
in the 1973-74 season, England vs Poland 1974 and an FA representative. Sequence
concludes with an establishing shot of Elland Road (the home ground of Leeds United).
2. Film: Shrek
Genre: Family Film
Setting: A Fairytale Land
Plot: An Ogre Shrek is reading a story from a book explaining the prologue to the film. A
princess is locked in a tower guarded by a dragon and needs true loves first kiss to break the
spell she is under. Shrek finds this quite humorous and exits the toilet revealing the swamp.
He is clearly happy in his environment.
Sequence type: As the film is CGI, their a lot of technical elements used in the title sequence.
Names of cast members are formed by the environment in which Shrek lives in. E.G. John
Lithgow is formed by various maggots crawling into his name.
3. Film: North By Northwest
Genre: American Thriller
Setting: New York 1959
Plot: Difficult to decipher the plot in the sequence however it is evident that the film is set in
New York. The music suggests that the plot will have some action or possibly foreshadows a
chase scene. The rush hour could also show that the film will be fast paced with little
emphasis on individual character storyline.
Sequence type: The sequence is animated at first. A grid is eventually formed which
transitions into a shot from an office block on a busy New York street whilst the credits roll.
The camera cuts to a bust street with many people heading in different directions signifying
rush hour. This could be a sign that there will be many people who influence the plot of North
by Northwest.
Film: James Bond Goldfinger
Genre: Spy Film
Setting: Latin America 1964
Plot: James Bond destroys a drugs factory in South America as ordered by MI6. From the
titles, it is indicated that Bond will be faced with a villain who goes by the name
“Goldfinger”. It is also indicated that Bonds love interest is a Pussy Galore.
Sequence: The sequence begins with the iconic shot of the gun shot from James Bond and the
slow descent of a red tint (similar to dripping blood). The sequence then changes to a golden
hand to the song “Goldfinger”. There are many shots of this golden woman with archival
footage of the characters including Bond, Pussy Galore and Auric Goldfinger on her body.
This continues through the remainder of the sequence.
