Advancing Risk Management
1. RISK MANAGEMENT SYMPOSIUM
Advancing To The Next Step – Sharing Common Experiences
12 April 2016
Transport Canada
Food Court Rooms (FC) 27, 28, 29, 30
Place de Ville, Tower C, 330 Sparks Street
Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0N5
Aviation continues to search for better ways to manage and mitigate risk and maintain historic
levels of safety. The operational challenge of balancing the need for regulatory compliance
with commercial efficiency without impacting safety may benefit by a common approach to risk
management. Key issues associated with these challenges will be examined at this unique
symposium by addressing common goals and experiences influencing how the aviation industry
identifies and manages risk.
BowTie diagrams are increasingly being used to integrate data and understanding of key
aviation safety risks. Informal exchanges of such models between airlines and others have been
taking place for some time. In 2014, the CAA UK launched a project to build and share risk
models related to their Significant Seven risks. Many in the industry see the continued
maturation of these initiatives as marking the next generation in improved aviation safety
management.
Moving to the next step – sharing models based on BowTie risk model methodology – and
building on common experience, will be the theme of the symposium.
12 April - SYMPOSIUM (no fee) hosted by Transport Canada and The Aloft Group
The format of this unique event will leverage interactive panels and audience participation.
Moving away from the traditional reliance on PowerPoint presentations, participants will have
the opportunity to share ideas, discuss existing BowTie risk analysis applications, have a look at
the latest challenges within the industry, and exchange ideas with like-minded peers about
possible solutions to manage risk while balancing the need for operational efficiency and
regulatory compliance.
The program agenda is still evolving and pending final confirmation from other invited key
organizations. The current preliminary agenda includes:

13-14 April – INTRODUCTORY BOWTIE TRAINING WORKSHOP
Conducted by The Aloft Group (fee applies)
BowTie risk management methodology is becoming the foundation for a more dynamic
approach to managing both tactical and strategic risk as well as measuring the effectiveness of
an organization’s Safety Management System (SMS). This workshop will provide foundational
training involving both BowTie Risk Management practices and BowTie software tools, and will
explore how the methodology and technology can enhance a safety culture, refine the
interpretation of your existing internal safety data, and measure the effectiveness of your SMS.
3. The participation cost for the 2-day BowTie training is USD$995 per person, which includes
course materials, 30-day trial licenses of the BowTieXP software, and lunches both days.
Training will include:
• Overview of operational risk management elements and BowTie methods
• BowTie concepts – Hazard, Top Event, Consequences, Threats, Controls (Barriers),
Escalation Factors
• Interactive case studies exploring real life aviation hazard(s) (Part 1)
• Step-by-step BowTie construction including use of BowTieXP software
• Facilitating a team of SMEs to build a BowTie model
• Interactive case study exploring real life aviation hazard(s) (Part 2)
• BowTie data analysis – linking the occurrence reports, investigations, audits
• Audits & Investigations - exploring AuditXP and IncidentXP applications
• The SMS context – measuring risk based performance indicators
Seats to both the SYMPOSIUM and the BOWTIE TRAINING WORKSHOP are limited. To reserve
