Before 1822, when it was made a city, Boston was still a town. The Siege of Boston was the opening stage of the Revolutionary War. It began with the American militia surrounding British soldiers who had just fled in defeat from the Battles of Lexington and Concord. The siege started on April 19, 1775, at 7:00 A.M., with the British fleeing to Boston. Hostile Bostonians, who had an army of only colonial militia, met them. The militia had four leaders, Artemas Ward, Israel Putnam, John Stark, and Nathanael Greene. Having learned the British had planned to occupy the hills surrounding Boston, the Bostonian militia under the leadership of Colonel William Prescott built fortifications on Breed’s Hill, even though Prescott had ordered the fortifications to be built on Bunker Hill. Breed’s Hill is smaller and closer to Boston than Bunker Hill. On June 16, 1775, British troops under the direction of Major General William Howe and Brigadier General Robert Pigot attacked the Americans at Breed’s Hill, and this attack is known as the Battle of Bunker Hill. It ended on June 17, 1775. The Battle of Bunker Hill is considered by many to be the bloodiest battle in the American Revolution. More than one thousand British soldiers and approximately four hundred American Patriots were killed or wounded. After the Battle of Bunker Hill, the Siege of Boston was a stalemate for some months. In early July 1775, George Washington was chosen as the new leader for the Boston militia. General Washington’s goal was to drive the British from Boston, and to do this they needed strong weapons. In the winter of 1775, Colonel Henry Knox along with Benedict Arnold, Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys of Vermont went to Fort Ticonderoga in Northeastern New York to fetch weapons. There they surprised the sleeping British soldiers with a sneak attack, which is known as the Battle of Fort Ticonderoga. The group headed back to Boston loaded with many stolen weapons, including more than fifty cannons. They arrived in Boston in late January 1776. General Washington and his men placed the Ticonderoga cannons on fortifications around Boston. On March 2, 1776, the Boston militia bombarded the British with their weapons for two days straight. On March 4, Washington moved several thousand of his men and a few cannons to Dorchester Heights, which overlooks Boston. Realizing the Boston militia had improved to a point where they could defeat them, the British General William Howe and his troops evacuated Boston on March 17, 1776, a day the Bostonians celebrate each year.

THE BOSTON MASSACRE On March 5, 1770, after being harassed for two years during their occupation of Boston, British soldiers finally lost control, firing into a mob of rioting Americans, killing several of them, including Crispus Attucks, a runaway slave and sailor, the first African American patriot killed. The aftermath of this “massacre” led to what eventually became the American Revolution. The importance of the event grew, as it was used for political purposes, to stoke the fires of rebellion in the colonists, and to show the British in the most unflattering light. The Boston Massacre gathers together the most important primary documents pertaining to the incident, along with images, anchored together with a succinct yet thorough introduction, to give students of the Revolutionary period access to the events of the massacre as they unfolded. Included are newspaper stories, the official transcript of the trial, letters, and maps of the area, as well as consideration of how the massacre is remembered today. Neil L. Materiality Matters: New Approaches to Medieval Wax Seals Studies

The preparations had been made well in advance. Now Britain was at war, and as the uniformed army prepared to face the enemy, a civilian army was mobilised at home. National Registration Officers, registrars, and 65,000 enumerators set about the huge task of registering every man, woman and child in a single weekend. It all went remarkably smoothly. This is the story of the 1939 Register for England and Wales, how it was taken, and what happened next. This is another chance to hear our expert talk about the 1939 Register. The content will be the same as the webinar on 24 November but this time you can come to Kew to hear the talk in person.

Using the 1939 Register: recording the UK population before the war

This presentation will introduce the concept of Freedom of Memory, which Elizabeth is currently developing. The talk will propose a possible definition for this potential new human right and explain why such a Freedom is necessary at this point in time. The presentation will identify both the benefits and responsibilities arising from Freedom of Memory. This session will also encourage discussion with attendees to consider whether such a Freedom is necessary, how it could be improved and in what fora this concept could fruitfully be developed.
