Use Case – Media Streaming
• Usage of media is expected to explode in vehicles as
consumers become more dependent on mobile
media and usage increases with autonomous vehicles
freeing up drivers to consume media
• Unlike current usage of media in homes, offices, malls
etc offload to fixed line network via WiFi is not an
option
• Scarce bandwidth has to be used to deliver
demanding services such as media streaming, gaming,
AR/VR, Location specific points of interest
• These will require application servers and media
gateways to be hosted within or close to the base
station environment
• MEC platforms can be placed at appropriate points in
the network, including within the base-station

Use Case – Digital Twin
• Sensor, Lidar, camera usage in a connected car is
expected to generate terabytes of data in a day
• While logic within the autonomous vehicle is likely to
operate in a closed-loop system, the terabytes of data
generated and used are not discarded but rather
transferred to a data pool in the cloud where it can be
stored, analysed and used by manufacturers and
service providers for predictive maintenance,
insurance, improving self driving algorithms etc.
• These vast amounts of data can be offloaded,
uploaded at the network edge rather than backhauled
on a mobile operators network
• During CAV development and testing phase it is also
likely that sensor and camera data will be streamed
back in real time to control centres in test
environments using MEC platform for localised high

Specialist Use Cases
• Besides passenger vehicles, there are a vast number of use
cases for autonomous and connected vehicles in logistics,
mining, e-agriculture industrial use cases etc
• In many of these cases, specialist control applications will run
in the edge cloud rather than on the vehicle due to the
specialist nature of the application
• Vehicles could include equipment such as diggers, excavators,
cranes, cargo vehicles, pods, drones (air and ground-based),
trains and amphibious traffic
• Control systems will need low latency and high reliability which
can only be obtained by using a MEC platform
• Eg of applications are for control of mining equipment,
industrial robots , control of drones for warehouse
functions/inspections, industrial vision where the computing
requirements are too complex to run on the end-use
equipment itself.

Benefits of MEC Platform
• Existing cloud services are extended into the highly
distributed mobile base station environment, leveraging the
existing LTE connectivity
• The MEC application operates as a roadside unit for vehicle-
to-infrastructure (V2I), potentially no need to build a
countrywide, Digital Short-Range Communications (DSRC)
network.
• Road hazards can be recognized and warnings can be sent to
nearby cars with extremely low latency
• Enables a nearby car to receive data in milliseconds, and the
driver/vehicle to react instantly – no need for data to leave
local environment
• Enables frequently used media to be stored/cached locally to
improve user experience and reduce network congestion – a
key issue when content consumption and production is
expected to explode with the advent of CAVs
• Local – Breakout/offload for high terabyte digital twin traffic
• Network slicing for prioritised services, MC-PTT for
emergencies

 Rai Way, Italy's state-owned transmission and broadcasting
network provider, in collaboration with Athonet has deployed a
ground-breaking private LTE network dedicated to serving the high
performance connectivity needs of RAI's television and radio
transmissions within the large area covered by EXPO 2015 World's
Fair in Milan.
 This dedicated broadband wireless network has enabled Rai Way to
manage its site communications and connect mobile high
definition TV cameras, radio locations and its Media Center in real-
time.
 The private LTE network can be installed very rapidly allowing Rai
Way to provide real-time wireless broadband connectivity to cover
events and provide images in real-time from specific areas of
interest even during critical situations when public networks

STRICTLYPRIVATE&CONFIDENTIAL 7 Use Case – Media Streaming • Usage of media is expected to explode in vehicles as consumers become more dependent on mobile media and usage increases with autonomous vehicles freeing up drivers to consume media • Unlike current usage of media in homes, offices, malls etc offload to fixed line network via WiFi is not an option • Scarce bandwidth has to be used to deliver demanding services such as media streaming, gaming, AR/VR, Location specific points of interest • These will require application servers and media gateways to be hosted within or close to the base station environment • MEC platforms can be placed at appropriate points in the network, including within the base-station Image Source: Volvo

STRICTLYPRIVATE&CONFIDENTIAL 8 Use Case – Digital Twin • Sensor, Lidar, camera usage in a connected car is expected to generate terabytes of data in a day • While logic within the autonomous vehicle is likely to operate in a closed-loop system, the terabytes of data generated and used are not discarded but rather transferred to a data pool in the cloud where it can be stored, analysed and used by manufacturers and service providers for predictive maintenance, insurance, improving self driving algorithms etc. • These vast amounts of data can be offloaded, uploaded at the network edge rather than backhauled on a mobile operators network • During CAV development and testing phase it is also likely that sensor and camera data will be streamed back in real time to control centres in test environments using MEC platform for localised high SLA

STRICTLYPRIVATE&CONFIDENTIAL 9 Specialist Use Cases • Besides passenger vehicles, there are a vast number of use cases for autonomous and connected vehicles in logistics, mining, e-agriculture industrial use cases etc • In many of these cases, specialist control applications will run in the edge cloud rather than on the vehicle due to the specialist nature of the application • Vehicles could include equipment such as diggers, excavators, cranes, cargo vehicles, pods, drones (air and ground-based), trains and amphibious traffic • Control systems will need low latency and high reliability which can only be obtained by using a MEC platform • Eg of applications are for control of mining equipment, industrial robots , control of drones for warehouse functions/inspections, industrial vision where the computing requirements are too complex to run on the end-use equipment itself.
