Sociological Imagination
1. Systematic tools for seeing individual troubles with
social lenses
2. The connection between personal troubles and public
issue
Example: Sociological
imagination of suicide.
1. Low degree of social
regulation. (Anomic Suicide)
2. High degree of social
regulation (Fatalistic Suicide)
3. Low degree of social
regulation ( Egoistic Suicide)
4. High degree of social
regulation( Altruistic Suicide)
Example of Applying the Sociological Imagination
Drinking A cup Of coffee
There are two ways of sociological
imagination.
1.Sociological Paradigm
2.Sociological Perspective
1.Fundamental image of subject matter
within a science
2.Model or pattern of thinking
3.Assumption agreed by all members of
a scientific community
Order Paradigm: Structural order(macro) coerces individual actionbehavior(micro)
Pluralist Paradigm: Individuals in way of
communicationinteraction make structural order. Its a way of
symbolic interaction.
Conflict Paradigm: Economic interests between powerful & powerless
classes lead to class struggle and social change.
Functionalist
Symbolic
Conflict
Society is made from a bunch of connected structure like institutions (educational
institution, financial institution, NGO , Law, Mass media, police forces, religion etc)
-Social structures cannot be change by any individuals action/ behavior
-Just like in a human body there are many organs that is dependent on other organs
society's institutions are also dependent on each other and cannot function properly
without working together.
-individuals are socialized by the institution of society.
Symbolic interactions explain the individual in a
society and their interaction with each other.
-people changes based on their interaction with
the object ideas and event of the society
-symbolic interactions emphasize the ways in
which society is actively shaped by the
individuals.
-social problems are created the habits of
individuals.
•Economic Inequalities between have and have not classes
•Bourgeoisie from capitalist society exploit the proletariat from
lower class
•Inequalities result in conflict.
 Kuhn’s Model:
Normal science
Anomalies
Crisis
Revolution
Paradigm Normal Science
 Social context
a. Individual b. Public Issue
1. Private trouble
When one person in
unemployment,
That is a “private trouble”
2. Public issue
When three million people
are unemployment , that is
a “public issue”
 b. Real Life Context
Any behavior can have
social imagination that
applicable. An example
of the application of the
sociological imagination
can be drinking tea.
Sociological Imagination is the relationship
between the broad social system and
individual action. In sociology to understand
once itself, we must understand the
relationship between the self and society .
it’s a willingness to view the social world
from the perspective of others.
