3. Weather forecasting
• Is the application of SCIENCE and
TECHNOLOGY to predict the state of the
atmosphere for a location
• Science and technology mainly meaning
computer systems
• Computers are used for two main applications
in weather forecasting:
1. Data logging
2. Modeling
4. Data logging (mainly data collection)
• (Definition: Data logging is the collection of
data at set intervals using sensors ,ADCs and
computer systems to monitor a process.)
• Sometimes used in monitoring and
controlling systems
• NB: No controlling involved in weather
forecasting
5. Methods to collect data
1. Weather balloons
2. Weather satellites
3. Weather stations
6. ……….chankman
Weather balloons
• A weather balloon carries a radiosonde into the
atmosphere
• A radiosonde is a battery powered telemetry instrument
• Telemetry meaning automated communication process by
which data is collected at inaccessible points and
transmitted to the receiving end
• (ground receiver)
• A radiosonde has: 1 sensors
2transimission path
7. ...........moyes
• The data is sent to the ground receiver
as radio signals
• The ADC convert the from analogue
format to digital format
9. ……..madhara
Weather satellites
.primarily used to monitor the weather and
climate on earth
• Transmit pictures to the ground receiver as
coded radio signals
• The images determine the amount of cloud
covered ,wind direction etc
11. 2. MODELLING
• mEteoRolOgists select a group of equations
that describe the conditions of the
atmosphere
• They pick out the factors they think are
important
• These values are fed into a computer
• After a period of time the computer will
produce results of the atmospheric
conditions changes that might be expected
12. ……..
• The accuracy of the predictions depend on
the data available to the computer
• The predictions require most POWERFUL
COMPUTERS
