- Welcome to TAFPâs first New Physician Webinar. Thank you for taking time out of your busy day to participate. We hope you learn a little about your Academy. My name is Kathy McCarthy and I am the Chief Operating Officer for TAFP. Joining us is Jonathan Nelson, TAFPâs Director of Communications. At the conclusion of the webinar you will be asked to fill out a brief survey online. - Unlike the AMA and itâs state societies, membership in the Academy is unified. As a member you belong to all levels of the organization and benefit from the rich resources and support available through the AAFP, TAFP and, in some cases, a local chapter.
- TAFP also extends a discount for our four symposia to new physician members. The savings vary from program to program, but can be as much as 27%.
- For over10 years, TAFP member surveys have shown that the number one service family physicians want from the Academy is Advocacy. Your state and national Academies serve as your voice and advocate for you as a family physician, and for family medicineâs future. To tell you more about the advocacy and communications aspects of the Academy, here is Jonathan NelsonâŚ. Left over from slide notes from AAFP: Less well known are AAFPâs private sector advocacy initiatives, among them: Pay for Performance, physician profiling, retail health clinics, and payment: bundling, coding and claim denials.
- The health care reform efforts in the U.S. and the realization of primary careâs integral role in caring for the nation has drawn increasing levels of attention: from the White House, in Congress, and from the public. (from another slide):AAFP leaders converge on the Hill annually, and work year-round with congressional leaders and staff to keep issues that impact family medicine and quality health care at the forefront.
- The AAFPâs national and state educational and advocacy efforts regarding the patient-centered medical home are resonating with the public and with political and health care leaders who recognize its importance in controlling medical costs while ensuring quality care thatâs focused on patient outcomes. The AAFPâs Connect for Reform keeps members in the loop, with updates from D.C. and around the nation as AAFP leaders, staff and members work to effect meaningful change that has the patient at its core.
- As an AAFP member, your involvement is key. Your time for advocacy may be limited, but the AAFPâs Speak Out tool ensures that your voice and message makes it to the legislators who can make a difference. And when you sign up for Legislative Alerts, youâll know, real-time, when a critical vote is pending, and what you can do to effect change from your laptop, any time of day.
- The AAFP has accumulated a listing of consultants and attorneys you can contact as you consider different post-residency options. They can help you structure your questions before the interview, and even review a contract before you sign.
- FPM Toolboxis another great resource that can give you hands-on tools you can use when youâre growing your practice.
- TAFP has a practice management consultant on retainer. In addition to writing articles for our magazine and presenting at conferences, Bradley Reiner offers a discounted rate to TAFP members. He has over 15 years of experience and has worked with family medicine practices of various sizes throughout Texas. His services include billing and coding reviews, compliance and documentation audits, practice evaluations and assessments, managed care contract negotiation, staff recruiting and human resources management and other general practice management issues.
- AAFP has been a leader in the Patient Centered Medical Home Movement. Your new practice may be in the process of adapting to the PCMH model, and you may be called on to help implement the change. AAFP and its chapters offer several resources to help you evaluate your practice.
- While Advocacy and Education are our top priorities, your Academy also devotes resources to improving the health of your patients and communities. AAFP has developed educational materials for patients that can continually reinforce your instructions long after they leave your office. Family Doctor.org has become a favorite site among family physicians and patients alike for easy-to-read, instructive health care materials that are available in English and Spanish.
- As a community leader, the Academy arms you with programs and ideas to help you improve your communityâs health.Tar Wars â In place over 20 years, Tar Wars has helped generations of children embrace a smoke-free world with its tobacco-free messages. The program is a curriculum that family physicians and other health care providers and educators can present to 4th and 5th grade students and then the students can enter a poster contest.Ask and Act â AAFPâs tobacco-cessation program can help you open the discussion with patients about their smoking, and arms you with tools to help them quit.Hard Hats for Little Heads â A TAFP program in conjunction with the TMA Foundation to provide helmets for children to encourage bicycle safety.AIM â AAFPâs multi-faceted fitness initiative helps you educate your patients and community about fitness, nutrition and emotional well-being.
- AAFP publishes several journals that you may find useful. The clinical content of American Family Physician is among the top reasons that medical students join AAFP. This same journal is used by practicing family physicians throughout the world to help keep them current on clinical topics relevant to family medicine. There is also CME available for some of the articles.
- Family Practice Management may not be something you looked at as a medical student or resident. Now that you are in practice, you will find that FPM is a valuable in providing resources in the areas of managing staff and the workflow of your practiceDealing with insurers and Medicare, getting paid, and building an efficient practice that works for you.Their online archive is a tremendous resource and there is CME available for some of the articles in there as well. FPM is published six times a year and is available online.
- The Annals of Family Medicine is a peer-reviewed research journal devoted to family medicine. You know that new research is being done all the time on patient care and various disease states. The Annals will help you stay up to date. Itâs a collaborative effort of seven different family medicine organizations, but for those with a penchant for research and the science of family medicine, youâll enjoy reading the Annals online.
- One of the great things about your Academy is the ways that we bring members together to share ideas, frustrations and best practices. We do this in person at our meetings and online using discussion lists and blogs. AAFPâs members-only e-discussion lists cover a broad range of topics and interest areas. As a member, you can join any and all lists to stay abreast of issues of interest to you, ask questions of peers, and be involved in the discussion.
- TAFP has a blog. You can read posts on the latest issues and share your views. Visit txfamilydocs.org and join the conversation.
- TAFP is a member-driven organization. In my years with TAFP weâve had tremendous leaders and volunteers throughout the organization. Our committees meet twice a year and, as a member, you can attend most any of them as a guest. Each year we ask members to let us know if they are interested in being appointed to a committee so watch for our Make Your Mark form to come to your e-mail in the spring. Our sections are open discussion forums. If you are interested in maternity care, rural health, leadership development or the medical home you can show up and join the conversation. TAFP has a large board with representatives from across the state. You are welcome to attend the Board meeting as a guest. - At the national level, Texas has representatives that serve on the Congress of Delegates and on various commissions. AAFP also has students, residents, new physician and special constituency slots at the congress of delegates. Lindsay Botsford in this photo served as a resident delegate at the 2010 Congress. Here is a photo of Texas two delegates and alternates plus Lindsay and Dr. Tricia Elliott who served as a special constituency delegate at the 2010 Congress of Delegates. You may think you have to serve at the state level for many years before you can get involved at the national but there is an opportunity for new physicians to serve much sooner. Each year AAFP has a National Conference of Special Constituencies which provides an opportunity to get involved. Each state can send one representative in each of the five constituencies â women, minorities, new physicians, IMGs and GLBTs. AAFP has two new physician delegates to the AAFP Congress of Delegates and a new physician on the Board of Directors and they are elected at NCSC.
