of the research.
• They keep researchers, experts and scholars updated by explaining a narrow/

6. Impact Factor (IF) of a Journal
• A measure reflecting the average number of citations to articles published
in journals, books, patent documents, thesis, project reports, news papers,
conference/ seminar proceedings, document published in internet, notes and
any other approved documents
• A measure used to denote the status of an academic journal
• A measure to assess the importance of an individual's published
contribution to a specific research area
7. Impact Factor : Advantages and Disadvantages
Advantages of IF
• A simple, important and widely adopted index to assess the quality of an
article
• Reflects the changing status of a journal within a research field due to the
increase or decrease in number of citations
Disadvantages of IF
• Incomplete information as all journals do not have a citation IF
• Citation window of IF is too short to detect the real impact of publications
• IF is not the golden standard to assess an article/ journal or an author’s work
as citation practice highly depends upon the subject area
