In this talk, I describe a number of emerging practices associated with online learning, networked scholarship, and MOOCs. I bring together results from 3 upcoming studies to describe how online learning is an emerging practice, how the field is becoming more interdisciplinary, how learning analytics are becoming more pervasive, and how various experiences and practices (e.g., notetaking and the scheduling of online learning to fit adult life's realities) evade learning analytics methods.

Creating a Virtual Library space using free web tools

Presented by Sharon Streams at the OCLC Asia Pacific Regional Council Meeting, 29-30 November 2017, Tokyo (Japan). During this time of rapid change in how information is created, disseminated, consumed, and preserved, the library’s mission to promote an informed, literate society through open access to knowledge is more essential than ever. To keep apace, more libraries are discovering the power of learning networks to spread and gather knowledge, explore ideas and co-create innovation. A current OCLC project, Wikipedia+Libraries: Better Together, is facilitating a learning network around the open-access encyclopaedia, Wikipedia, a resource that embodies both the opportunities and the challenges of today’s information landscape. By introducing library staff to the innerworkings of Wikipedia and the volunteer community of editors who maintain it, and by exposing Wikipedians to the expertise and resources of libraries, this project is forging new connections that will catalyze improvements to Wikipedia itself, to the benefit of online information seekers.

What skills, abilities, and habits of mind do today’s graduates need for their careers and to solve complex problems in a constantly changing, globally-connected world? How do we integrate liberal education and authentic learning experiences with our digitally-networked context? What does community-engagement look like in a virtual community? In this session participants will consider case-studies of technology-enhanced community-engaged learning drawn from Digital Pedagogy in the Humanities: Concepts, Models, and Experiments (co-edited by the session leader) with a focus on digital pedagogy keywords such as, Community, Digital-Divides, Fieldwork, Public, Race, and Social Justice. Participants will develop a curriculum that scaffolds self-directed digitally-augmented problem-solving from introductory to capstone level courses. Participants will explore innovative pedagogies, interrogate effective models for integrating authentic learning opportunities shaped by digital tools and resources at all levels, and work collaboratively to develop a toolkit and to-do list for encouraging this type of learning on their own campus.

This presentation (rescued from the archives) was presented at the 2007 School Library Association of New Zealand Aotearoa Conference. It challenges library staff to reconsider their role in information literacy and how to ensure students and teachers are equipped to navigate the new information landscape. It asks for experts in contemporary information literacy issues, such as online identity, digital rights, social networking, personalisation and collaborative content, rather then expatriates continuing to do things as they did in ‘the old country’?
