A survey conducted in 1991 by the American Association for
University Women
Gender bias – Mostly affected Girls
Affect their Self esteem and academic self – concept
It is increase – get older- problem also increase
In the high school
Boys - – ability causes for success
inadequate effort for failure
Where as
Girls
Attribute luck as the cause for their successes
inadequate ability as the cause for their failure
Elementary stage
10 point different between boys and girls in their self
estimation about their ability. There is dissimilarity in their
self concept even in element school stage
4. • School students spent more hours
of the day in the classroom
activities.
• School +academic activities=
outside+ experience
• Experience(Educational)= (teacher
interaction+ students interaction)
very important element in the
school.
• Generally in the classroom , Girls
are passive and inactive. This kind
of negative interaction in the class
room between boys and girls
5. • Research studies reveal that teachers
more often interact to boys, paying more
attention and providing feedback to boys.
• Teacher said
• Boys replied that volunteer to answer
loudly the question.
• Girls hesitate to answer to answer them ,
• this study further states
• Boys tried to catch the attention of
teacher 8 times more than girls.
• Teacher advise girls : respect the
classroom practices if you want to say
some thing you must raise your hand and
get my permission and then only you
should say what you want to say.
6. • Teacher while giving
feedback, exhibit gender
discrimination
• Example
• teachers praise boys for their
academic achievement but
while praising girls, they only
say their handwriting is good
, work is neat and their
behaviour is gentle and quite.
7. To sum up
• Teacher interact more with boys
than girls in the classroom
• Their interaction are such that
putting questions frequently boys ,
appreciation their right response
and correcting wrong response.
• The feedback given by teacher tend
to be gender biased.
• This kind of gender bias in
classroom interaction shatters the
self esteem and self confidence of
girls and adversely affect their
academic achievement.
8. Gender Discrimination in class room Rituals

• standup- Expected more form the girls
• Cleaning the blackboard- responsibility of
girls
• Clean and neat – girls
• Wearing uniform- more in the case of girls
than boys
• Blaming the girls for any difficulty
• Not taking congnisance of the violations of
classroom regulation committed by boys
9. • Permitting boys
immediately when they
seek permission to go
out of the classroom
• Thanking the teacher
when he leaves the
classroom at the end of
the period – more
expected from girls

responsibilities for female
• Very rare to see – invite- women
staff, women writer and social
reformers to preside over a
function and special lecture
11. • No rest room, first aid for
girls
• No effect are made to
prevent sexual harassment
to girls that happen in the
school campus
• Higher secondary school,
girls art not allowed to
choose their preferred
course.
