Towards an Enterprise Aggregated Solution for DQF - Paola Valli (TAUS)

In this session, we will discuss an alternative solution to the current DQF API in which translated data segments remain on enterprise servers. TAUS is planning on providing an open specification of methods to facilitate the aggregation of data on the enterprise side. The benefit of this solution is that the actual translated segments and other sensitive data are not shared. This is more economic and it makes DQF more attractive to enterprises that are restricted in their sharing of data with a third party. One of the main problems in the translation industry today is the lack of benchmarking. The output of MT engines cannot be compared to industry averages or standards because these are not yet available. Automated scores are meaningless outside the “laboratory”. At the same time, buyers of translation services are increasingly interested in translated content of different quality levels. They want to save on some content and invest more in other. They also want to know how the different engines are performing on different content in different language pairs. How can we be sure MT providers deliver what they are paid for? Benchmarking MT engines and creating a library of MT use cases are one way to move forward. Using industry benchmarking based on evaluation and productivity data is another option. One way or another, buyers need to be able to compare and benchmark MT solutions to make informed decisions.

Engaging vendors to ensure quality expectations are met. LSPs are all faced with quality demands from their clients. As clients, which methodology should we use in order to ensure vendors meet our needs for human translation? In this session, we’ll explore the approach eBay has taken from the start (from testing Lingua Leads + back-ups, providing regular evaluations and holding vendors financially accountable for quality deliverables, to close communication between our internal linguists and our vendors’ language teams). Other companies may do it completely differently and still obtain good quality. They may also automate HT Quality Evaluation, which is the next step we are looking at in our journey. This topic will allow panelists to express their views on how to best engage LSPs to deliver quality and to generate a healthy debate during our break-out session.

You’ll learn what to measure.” In fact, measuring allows decision-makers to reduce uncertainty and the risk of wasting money. As for integrated TM management solution, a whole process of TM production, as well as large scale of TM maintenance and output, will be addressed. While for TM sharing, a crowdsourcing method, Tmxmall tmx exchange platform, will be introduced. Besides, the other two TM sharing methods will be emphasized, of which one is private TM sharing realized by Tmxmall TM private cloud while the other is translation memory marketplace functioning on business and working based on private cloud.

Parallel data has become an extremely valuable resource, not only for building new statistical machine translation systems, but also for building other useful resources for translators, such as bilingual concordancers, translation memories or bilingual lexicons. One of the most important and under-exploited sources of bilingual information is the Internet: many strategies have been proposed to crawl specific websites, but defining methods for surfing the whole Web and harvesting bitexts is still an open problem. Recently, the free/open-source tool Bitextor has become one of the reference tools for this task: it has been one of the basic tools featured in European projects such as Panacea or Abu-MaTran, and it has been chosen as the reference tool for the shared task on document alignment of the 1st Conference on Machine Translation (WMT 2016). In this presentation we will describe this tool, explaining the advantages when compared to other state-of-the-art tools, and the strategies chosen to crawl large amounts of parallel data.

Review processes as the last step in quality assurance workflows are “notorious for causing delays and frustrations”.
