At the TAUS User Conference, a number of attendees pitched brief proposals for achieving greater power and efficiency in the translation chain through innovations involving sharing and pooling ideas and effort. Chris Wendt from Microsoft suggested that one way to translate and publish more content was to reserve post-editing for texts requiring high quality translation, and simply publish the rest. The community would then decide whether or not it needs to improve the quality because the information in question is useful. In this approach, readers can click on the MT version of a piece of content and see alternatives from the translation database, some using MT and TM data in an automated workflow, and others using a translation contributed by the crowd in real time.

Most of LSPs have not converted the translated bilingual documents to TM till now. Even the LSPs have established TMs, they are also confronted with disordered management of TMs and low efficiency. This presentation concerns the trials and tribulations of managing the conflicting expectations different groups have toward Japanese-to-English machine translation (MT) in a corporate environment. Upper management sees MT as a science, with expectations of precision they are accustomed to in our products (precision measured with scanning electron microscopes). Our translators and editors see translation as an art, with the freedom and versatility to craft each sentence as a unique piece. To each group there is a miryoku, or point of appeal that must be achieved to some degree for the result to satisfy our real audience, field engineers who face an enormous, fast-moving river of information…in a language they do not understand.
