This document summarizes a presentation on online professional development for STEM educators. It introduces two examples of online PD programs, Click2SciencePD and the NMC Academy, which provide interactive learning modules and mini-courses. Attendees then discussed adopting and adapting these models, creating more networks of opportunities, and incentives for participation. The discussion concluded with recommendations for how to promote STEM PD 3.0 across California through these online networks and models.
7. The Value of Online Learning
• Allows participants to
take ownership of the
process
• Offers customized
experiences
• Peers can interact at their
own pace and when time
is available
• Trainer is able to provide
individualized support
13. Professional recognition – “Open Badges”
Progress badges from each
mini-course…
…and professional
recognition from the
Academy

(30 seconds!)
Topic (A) – Adopting & Adapting
Specific to the two case studies, Click2Science & the
NMC Academy, discuss how these could be adopted
or adapted across California. Which specific
organizations, including your own, can benefit from
these examples of STEM PD 3.0? What would be
the things you need to do that more effectively?
What are the next steps you need from us to make
that happen?
24. Rapid Fire Recommendations

Topic (B) – More Networks of Opportunities
You’ve just heard two case studies that provide examples of
innovations in STEM PD. What are some other exemplary
models of STEM professional development you’ve seen in and
beyond California, online or on-ground? To help CSLnet create
an expanded network of opportunities for STEM PD 3.0 across
California, list some of the top organizations/programs and why
you believe their approach should be replicated or scaled.
Include any reference URL’s, too, so we can easily share your
recommendations.

(30 seconds!)
Topic (C) – Incentives & Recognition
Digital badges are a new form of “professional
recognition” being used by organizations. Will this
work? What, in general, are some of the “essential
incentives” needed to encourage and enable
wide-scale participation in STEM PD … and how
can digital badges be linked to these professional
incentives?

Not sure we want to take time for this or not. Getting to know the audience- yes – I think we should do this. What is your role (trainer, coach, site director, frontline staff)? How are you currently doing professional development with staff? Who uses coaching? Staff meetings? Formal training opportunities? How many of you are currently conducting professional development focused on STEM implementation?

We’re using the phrase PD 3.0 just to be provocative. There is no definitive definition of what it is – but it is meant to underscore the need to think about new models of professional development that can reach MORE educators and can fill the gaps in STEM PD capacity we’re facing in this country – and around the world. We all know that good professional development is more than an event – it is a process of learning and continuous improvement designed to advance the practice of an individual or team of practitioners. As with the shift from web 1.0 to web 2.0 to web 3.0, we can now create professional learning opportunities that are more personalized, more professionally (socially) connected, and better adapted to the high demand, high stress profession of teaching, both in and outside of schools.
Online Professional Development is valuable because it affords trainers and participants the chance to apply a “blended approach,” weaving face-to-face learning with further reflection, support and planning on an as-needed, at-your-own-pace basis. The online environment breaks down barriers of time and place to deepen PD, but it still requires a commitment on the part of the practitioner to advance their practice. Are there other slides we want to add here about PD 3.0?Given the time we have, I think we add this as a comment to the Web 3.0 slide.
