Famous castles. The Chateau Galliard , this one was built by Richard the Lion Heart and was named by Richard himself as the ‘Saucy Castle’ but a VERY famous castle is called Windsor Castle, and yes, Queen Elizabeth II and the rest of the Royal Family regard Windsor castle as their home. Windsor castle is the OLDEST and LARGEST castle and has been standing for more than 900 years! That’s amazing because the castle is in a good shape as in , its not crumbling or falling down, I mean look at it! After the English Civil War, Cromwell wanted to pull down the castle, luckily and I mean LUCKILY he was beaten by 1 vote! In Georgian times King George III went blind and mad , he was locked up in Windsor castle for 10 years in which he died. Plenty of people died which means Windsor castle is haunted by ghosts! Spooooooky!
Warwick castle Warwick castle was founded/ built in 1068 and has been re-built an d update several times. Warwick castle sits on the bend of the River Avon In the 17th Century the grounds were turned into gardens and the castle’s defence was enhanced for the English Civil war, a war that changed history! Warwick castle could hold the siege of the war and held prisoners! Before the castle was built there was a fort which was built roughly in the 9th century. Warwick castle is home to many ghosts , legend says Fulke Greville is said to haunt the Watergate Tower although he was killed in Holborn.
Hever Castle Hever castle was built in the more peaceful times when Sir Geoffrey Boleyn rebuilt and renewed the castle during the reign of Henry III de Hever. Hever Castle has ‘one of the MOST beautiful gardens’ out of all the other castles that remain standing which is quite a lot! Hever Castle is connected with the second wife of King Henry VIII - Queen Anne Boleyn. Hever Castle is set in the village of Hever 35 miles south of London. Hever castle is the birth place of Ann Boleyn, King Henry VIII's 2nd wife and that’s why is connected to Ann!
Rochester Castle Here is a castle which isn’t too famous but is known and is found on the eastern bank of the River Medway Rochester Castle is 30 miles south east of London in the centre of the town. The castle is considered to be one of the most well preserved of its kind in England. It’s over 113 feet high! Which is about 19 6ft men standing ontop of eachother! The castle is open daily all year round from 10am until 6pm from April until September and until 4pm October to March, which makes it sound like a shop!
