Suzanne Jackson: Suggestions from Nature is an exhibition of recent paintings and drawing
by accomplished artist, Suzanne Jackson. In her paintings, literal structure and quiet
narratives evolve out of layered acrylic. By omitting the canvas and incorporating
reused and natural materials, Jackson responds to humanity’s historical relationships to
environments through her reflections on diverse heritages and cultures that have
impacted her personal experiences. Born in Saint Louis in 1944, Jackson was raised in
the Yukon Territory of pre-statehood Alaska, where her interest in nature and
indigenous backgrounds took root. In the mid-60s, Jackson traveled throughout South
America as a dancer for the Sacramento Music Circus, Music Theater USA. In Los
Angeles, Jackson turned her studio into Gallery 32, hosting discussions, fund-raisers for
social causes and exhibiting politically engaged work from emerging artists such as
David Hammons, Senga Nengudi and Betye Saar. Jackson now lives in the low country
of the South, where she has taught art at Savannah School of Art and Design since 1996.
Having shown worldwide over four decades and recently included in the Now Dig This!
Art and Black Los Angeles 1960-1980 exhibition at MOMA PS1, Temporary Agency would
like to focus on the work Jackson is making now.
