The document proposes a "Fall Work Day" holiday at the University of Jamestown for students to do community service. It would take place during one of the school's existing short fall breaks. The proposal aims to get approval from the school administration, faculty, and students. It provides background on the target audiences and outlines tactics to convince each group, such as emphasizing the public relations and resume benefits. Coaches would be asked to help promote the idea to administrators, and research on other successful service programs would be presented. Faculty would be told about student bonding opportunities and a break from classes. Students would see how a dedicated day could help with time management and future applications.

2. Executive Summary
Situation Analysis
The first semester of school at the University of Jamestown there is only two breaks during the
five month semester, fall break and Thanksgiving break. These breaks are fantastic for students
because if gives them enough time to go home if the opportunity exists and gives them a mental
break from the stresses of classes. Fall break is about four days, which is great for those that live
within driving distance from home because they are able to spend those days away from campus.
For those that don’t have the luxury of going home or going home with a friend they spend those
days hanging out on campus and sleeping. Thanksgiving break lasts a week and gives most
students the opportunity to go home.
During these two breaks students relax and catch up homework or get ahead on classwork. The
campus is quiet due to the fact that those who are on campus are shut up in their dorms.
Everyone all but disappears from the public.
More than half of the students on campus are on an athletic team and many of their coaches
emphasize public service. Ideally the best time to be involved in the community would be during
those two breaks but because of the lack of free time in the fall semester students would rather
spend that week and half of total break days doing what they want to do. Students instead find
themselves doing their required community service projects in between games and exams.
Statement of Purpose
The school should create a day, Fall Work Day, for those who need to do community service and
for those who would like to do community service.
TargetAudience
The forthcoming plan targets three different distinct audiences: The administration, the faculty,
and the students.
The administration consists of the higher ups of the school. They are between the ages of 35-60,
they hold at least a masters, they are both male and female and make the most money on the
campus. Their purpose is to make sure that the students are getting educated and that classes
aren’t canceled unless there is a strong reason for doing so. They help promote the school and
bring in new students by maintaining the school in a good light. They work hard to try and
guarantee that the students will gain a good education and will graduate with enough knowledge
to succeed in the working world.
The faculty consists of the professors who teach the courses offered at the school. They are
between the ages of 30-70, they hold masters and doctorates degrees, both male and female and
make enough money to support themselves and family. They make themselves available to the
students outside of class, they use their experience and knowledge to teach students on how to be
successful in the real world and act as advisors and mentors to their students.
3. The students are the people that come to school to learn. They are from several states and few
other countries outside the United States. They are between the ages of 17-30. They hold a high
school diploma or GED, some may even have an Associate’s degree. They are both male and
female, some are athletes, some are musicians, some are part time students and some work while
taking classes. Their overall goal is to graduate with a Bachelor’s degree and get a job after
graduation.
The Plan
Goal: To convince administration to create Fall Work Day holiday
Objective: To gain approval for Fall Work Day holiday
Tactic #1: To talk to the various coaches on campus and have them help sell the idea of a day
off to do community work to the administration.
Brief Description: First set up meetings with the coaches and sell them on the idea of this
holiday and then find a representative for the coaches to come and talk to the administration.
Tactic #2: To talk to the administration emphasize that by having a day for public service
projects would be good press for the school and help bring in more prospective students.
Brief Description: To do research on other schools and how successful their programs are and
then present it to the administration.
Goal: To convince faculty that a Fall Work Day holiday is a good excuse for no classes
Objective: To bring the faculty on board for Fall Work Day
Tactic #1: To address the benefits the holiday
Brief Description: Present research to the faculty that was presented to the administration.
Tactic #2: To encourage the faculty to join in
Brief Description: Make it a day for the faculty to solidify their bond with their students. Let
them know that students working with the faculty outside of the classroom can be beneficial for
both parties.
Goal: To convince the students that having a day set aside for community service is beneficial
Objective: To bring the students on board for the Fall Work Day holiday
Tactic #1: To sell the idea that because of hectic schedules having an entire day to do community
service is beneficial, especially for those who need it for sports
Brief Description: Have students look over the fall semester schedule and their own schedules
(classes, sports, choir, work, ect) and show them that this is ideal for them.
Tactic #2: To sell them the benefits of having a day of community service
4. Brief Description: To let students know that what they do on Fall Work Day can be used on
resumes and applications for grad school.
