6. Why to implement 5s in warehouse?
ξ Making problems visible.
ξ Having a clean and organized warehouse is about more than just looking great.
ξ It’s about having more efficient warehousing operations, excelling at training, and encouraging
communication.
ξ A warehouse should be able to identify and surface issues quickly, address their root causes, and
prevent recurrence.
ξ If tasks are being done incorrectly, 5S can identify these issues and surface them for quicker
resolution.
7. Implications of 5S In Warehouse
Sorting: Sorting is one of the most important staff that one warehouse manager has to perform effectively in the
first period. But due to using of established categories, Warehouse managers often fall into mismanagements.
The best way to sort your warehouse is through type of object & Chronological cycle order or most to least used
& vice versa. At home we separate things as per our need. We keep those which we need & throw them up which
we don’t. similarly at warehouse also things such as inventories, company assets, we apply same principle.
“keep only what you need & set priorities through its outcome like FIFO & LIFO”.
Tools we can use: Red tags & Red tags boards; Equipment tags.
Set in order: This term is all about Organizing your warehouse, which is one of the most challenging aspect of
5S. There is no single size which fits all the solution. The manager has to figure out how the warehouse processes
flows and how he can eliminate waste in terms of tine & Resources.
Required tools: Warehouse Signs, Floor And Aisle markers, Labels And Inventory tags.
8. Shine: Maintain good housekeeping in your warehouse. Leaks and spills should be taken care of
immediately as these are unnecessary hazards that may cause slips and falls. It’s important to maintain
cleanliness in the facility to be able to clearly evaluate where efficiency is lacking.
Required tools: Janitorial supplies, spill kits.
Standardize: Consistency in implementing your new system is the key to improved efficiency. It’s essential
to have a work manual that documents the standards implemented. Regular training sessions also help
workers deal with not just the regular work but also how to react in situations like breakdown of
equipment, chemical spills, and emergencies.
Required tools: Visual guidance, Training manuals & videos.
Sustain : It’s easy to slip back to old habits without proper monitoring and evaluation. Conduct regular
evaluation or even surprise inspections to make sure workers are following the new standards.
Be open to change when a new standard or policy is not working out. 5S, after all, is not about
complacency but rather the continuous striving for perfection.
