2. What is NEMATODE ?
The word NEMATODE is derived from
two Greek words, NEMA meaning a
“thread” and “OID” meaning “like”.
When these two words were combined
it gave the name NEMATODE, meaning
thread like. Nematodes include the
microscopic unsegmented animals
under the phylum – NEMATODA.
Nematodes are a large ubiquitous
group of animals with representatives
in almost every kind of environment.
3. DIGESTIVE SYSTEM:
In case of plant parasitic nematodes stylet, esophagus,
intestine, rectum and anus are the major parts of digestive
system. In free living nematodes stylet is not present.
4. STYLET:
The portion of the alimentary canal
between the stoma and the intestine is
called esophagus. In many groups of
nematodes esophagus is divisible into
three regions, the corpus, which is the
more or less cylindrical anterior part, the
basal, posterior or terminal bulb, which is
mostly pisiform in shape, and the slender
isthmus connecting these two parts. The
corpus may be modified so that two parts
are distinguished, the slender anterior
part, called the procorpus or precorpus,
and a swollen posterior part, the
metacorpus or postcorpus, usually
referred to as the median bulb.
5. ESOPHAGUS:
The portion of the alimentary canal
between the stoma and the intestine is
called esophagus. In many groups of
nematodes esophagus is divisible into
three regions, the corpus, which is the
more or less cylindrical anterior part, the
basal, posterior or terminal bulb, which is
mostly pisiform in shape, and the slender
isthmus connecting these two parts. The
corpus may be modified so that two parts
are distinguished, the slender anterior
part, called the procorpus or precorpus,
and a swollen posterior part, the
metacorpus or postcorpus, usually
referred to as the median bulb.
6. INTESTINE, RECTUM, CLOACA, and ANUS:
Intestine is the major part of the
alimentary canal, linking the esophagus
with the rectum, It is usually simple and
straight tube, in which digestion takes
place. At the posterior end of the
intestine, there is short tube called rectum
in female. In males, the reproductive
system joins the rectum to form a chamber
called cloaca. Ultimate terminal opening of
rectum or cloaca is called anus.
