The term nutraceutical was coined by “Stephen Defelice”
NEUTRACEUTICAL is any substance that is a food or part of
food and provides medical or health benefits, including the
prevention and treatment of disease.
The functional component of the food must be standardized in
the nutraceutical produced under good manufacturing
practices (GMPs).

15. Nutraceutical Regulation In INDIA-
Nutraceuticals and fuctional food in the recent years have
witnessed a tremendous increase in the interest among the
consumers due to their potentialof providing health benefits.
INDIA is the second largest producer of the food. Although,
there were multiple laws and regulations covering the food in
india,but there was no single law that could have significantly
regulated the functional food.
IN 2006,the Indian government passed food safety and
standard act to integrate and streamline the many regulations
covering nutraceuticals, food and dietary supplement.

16. • The new regulation ,food safety and standards for food health
supplements,nutraceuticals, food for special dietary
use,functional food and normal food regulation 2016,is based on
and framed from section 22 of the food and safety act that
provides-
1.General conditions for the manufacturing and sale of
Nutraceuticals,food supplement etc.
2. Various schedule dealing with vitamins,minerals,list of plant
ingredient as well comprehensive schedule of additives which is
further divided into various sub categories.
3. Comprehensive rules for themanufacturing and sales of food
for special healthsupplement,nutraceuticals,special dietary use
and normal food.
