YouTube is a video/media sharing website on
the internet. Anyone can create an account and
put video onto this site. It is widely popular as
both an entertainment and educational forum.
People can search videos for cute animal tricks,
people tripping down stairs, or instructions for
            making a paper airplane.
 60 hours of video are uploaded every minute, or one
hour of video is uploaded to YouTube every second.
 Over 4 billion videos are viewed a day
 Over 3 billion hours of video are watched each month
   on YouTube
 500 years of YouTube video are watched every day on
Facebook, and over 700 YouTube videos are shared on
   Twitter each minute
 100 million people take a social action on YouTube
(*likes, shares, comments, etc) every week

* See Glossary At End

 There is no way to know who a person really is online.
It could really be a teenage peer for your child, or it
could be an adult predator posing as such. Any
personal information should not be divulged online.
 Any distinguishing landmarks, license plates, school
paraphernalia, etc. can be viewed in videos and used
to help track down the location of a person.
 Videos that are sexually provocative can be used to
entice viewers – people need to be cautious about
how the videos they post may be used.
 Cyber-bullying occurs – be mindful of what is being
posted so that it is not hateful or hurtful. Likewise,
report cyber-bullying when your child is a victim.
 How old does my child have to be to use YouTube?

Users are required to be 13 years to create an account. If at any time it is discovered that a
user is under the age of 13, their account will be suspended.

 My child is being harassed through their account on YouTube. What do I do?

You can block the harrassing user (see instructions further in Power Point) and you can also
view YouTube’s harrassment page in their Safety Center (see links further on).

 How can I control what comments or content my children see?

Our Safety Mode feature is one option. Safety Mode is an opt-in setting that helps screen
out potentially objectionable content that you may prefer not to see or don't want others in
your family to stumble across while enjoying YouTube. When you opt in to Safety Mode,
videos with potentially objectionable content or that have been age restricted will not show
up in video search, related videos, playlists, shows and movies. Safety Mode does not
remove content from the site but rather keeps it off the page for users who opt in. See the
next page for instructions on opting in to Safety Mode.
 Go to YouTube.com
Safety Mode On:

Click Safety Mode at the bottom of every page to open the preference setting
Click On and Save to opt in
You are now in Safety Mode!

To opt out, open Preferences and Click Off and Save.
Locked Safety Mode:

Sign in to your YouTube account
Click Safety Mode at the bottom of every page to open the preference setting
Click On and Save and Lock to opt in and lock this browser
You are now in Locked Safety Mode!

To opt out, open Preferences and Click Unlock Safety Mode.
Enter your YouTube password to unlock Safety Mode.
 Keep an open line of communication with your
child. Let them know your concerns and be sure
to listen to theirs. Discuss your favorite videos
and theirs, maybe even view them together.
 Keep an eye on your child’s internet usage,
whether YouTube or not. Know how they are
using it, what they are viewing, what they are
    communicating and with whom.
 Consider investing in software filters that would
block out certain websites and content.
 Think about a computer usage/safety contract
    (see next slide).
              safety-contract.html
 Use this website as a guide for creating your
own personal contract. This is a document
designed, agreed-upon and signed by both
parent(s) and child(ren). It serves to uphold
  certain guidelines and agreements regarding
internet use and security measures between
              parents and children.
 Cyber-bullying: using an online platform – such as Facebook or YouTube – to cause
potential harm or embarrassment to others. Teens may specifically use these
platforms to make fun of or spread rumors about classmates, neighbors, friends,
etc. In some instances this tactic has lead to serious problems and even the
                                  suicides of some teenagers.
 ”Likes”: when specifically related to social media such as YouTube or Facebook,
the act of clicking a “like” button on the website to signify one’s approval or
empathy or just plain enjoyment of a video (or photo, status update, link, etc.)
 “Shares”: when specifically related to social media such as YouTube or Facbook,
the act of copying a link to one person’s video, photo, status, etc. and posting it
on your own page, giving credit to the original poster.
 Social Media: platforms, primarily online, where people can gather to interact
with each other through written communication and the sharing of photos,
videos, and links to other websites.
 Upload: the act of taking a photo, video or text and putting it onto the internet
 Website: a place on the internet where people can find information about a
variety of topics. Frequently used by businesses, organizations or individuals to
                            promote goods and services offered.
 YouTube: a social media website where people can place videos online for others
                                            to view.
