“Two sides of the Haymarket”
I felt that document #2 made a better argument. The judge that wrote it based the article
more on fact that the ranting of a radical. Back then much like today people are in the position
where work, any type of work is desirable. As humans in order to survive as a society we must
work together and obey societal rules. The Judge states in the opening sentence of his document
that “The law is common sense”. How very true, we must be held accountable for our actions and
what we do and not feel like we are being repressed by doing work that may be considered menial.
Mr. Spies appeared to be a little obsessive and paranoid about factories and all of the spying and
emasculating that he perceived to be going on.
The judge stated some great points about how we feel as Americans: The people of this
country love their institutions…homes …and property. We do value our freedom and all that we
have worked hard to obtain through that hard work. In order to survive in a working society we do
have to be held accountable for our actions. Men that encourage and suggest murder should be
held accountable along with the men that commit those murders. We do have the freedom of
speech, which is a great right but we must also be held accountable for what we say and the
possible repercussions that may follow. As quoted earlier “The law IS common sense”.
