“Whooping Cough”
Pertussis is an air attacker looking for
its next victim. At first it might seem
like a common cold (runny nose, fever,
and a cough) but that’s just stage one.
A couple weeks later the Pertussis
infection causes violent coughing you
can’t stop. Pertussis is highly
contagious and easy to catch.

DTaP

How does it
spread?
Expectant mothers with Pertussis
“whooping cough” can give it to their
newborn babies.
Whooping Cough is very harmful to babies.
Everyone around them should be
vaccinated.
Babies and young children can get Pertussis
from siblings or adults.
This harmful disease can be spread while an
infected person has common cold like
symptoms.
Pertussis is spread through the air when
someone coughs, sneezes or breathes.

About the Pertussis
Vaccination
In the United States DTaP, tDap, and
Td vaccines are most common.
Children should get 5 doses of DTaP
One dose at each of the following
ages:
(2, 4, 6, and 15-18 months and 4-6
years)
Td (tetanus-diphtheria) is given to
adolescents and adults ever 10 years
or after exposure to tetanus
Tdap is given as a single dose to
adolescents preferably at age 11-12
years and adults 19 and older
Expectant mothers should receive a
Tdap during pregnancy (27-36
weeks)
