MARCH HOME WARRANTY TIP: Spring forward on March 13 and
replace batteries in all of your smoke and carbon monoxide
detectors. Make sure they are all in perfect working condition.
March Calendar
National Red Cross Month
March 13th: Daylight Saving Time Begins
March 17th: Saint Patrick's Day
March 20th: Spring Begins
March 27th: Easter
The First Day of Spring
is March 20!
Celebrate the first day of spring by throwing
open your windows and letting the fresh air
in and the stale air of winter out!
Spring clean your appliances the natural
way with these green tips:
Microwaves
Mix 1/2 cup of water with a few teaspoons
of baking soda in a microwave safe bowl.
Put the bowl in the microwave and run it
for 2 minutes. Take out the bowl and wipe
it clean with just a rag; every last spot will
come out!
Ovens
You can rub the inside of your oven with
wet steel wool to remove the tough stuff,
and then sprinkle baking soda throughout
the oven. Let it sit for a few minutes, then
just wipe it all clean with a wet rag…all
done and no caustic chemicals!
Coffee Makers
When the coffee maker is empty pour in a
mixture of 1 cup white vinegar and some
hot water to fill the reservoir to the top.
Run the coffee maker like you were making
coffee, just without any beans in it. Once
the cycle has finished, run it twice more
with just plain water, which will rinse out
the vinegar and any build up left inside.
The coffee will taste better the next time
you make a cuppa Joe!
Refrigerators
Baking soda all the way—why would you
want to spray chemicals in the giant box
that holds your food? Make a nice paste
from baking soda and water (equal parts
of both) and scrub away. Wipe down with
a clean cloth.
Get Ready for Spring
with a Stocked Toolbox
for Basic Home Repairs
Whether you are a first-time homeowner
or have owned a home for years, there’s
probably a long list of to-do tasks just
waiting to be tackled.
Take a look at the 15 essential tools
recommended for your toolbox to get you
through most basic home repair projects.
l A good screwdriver—one will do if it’s
the kind that fits a number of different
heads, including the basics—Phillips and
slotted.
l An adjustable
wrench—
eliminates the
need for an entire
set of socket
wrenches.
l Three types of pliers—ordinary, needle-
nose and wire cutters.
l A set of Allen wrenches—to tighten
bolts that have six-sided holes on top.
l A level—to help with everything from
hanging to shelving.
l A retractable tape measure—25 feet
should be sufficient.
l A stud finder—to help
locate behind the wall or
ceiling structural boards.
l A good hammer—a
16-ounce claw hammer
with a good-fitting grip.
l A small handsaw—one with a 12-inch
blade that fits into a sheath for safety.
l A plunger—to clear clogged drains.
l A chisel—to help chip out wood to reset
a door hinge or adjust a sticking latch.
l A utility knife—one with a retractable,
replaceable blade.
l An assortment of screws and nails.
l A cordless
drill—one that
drills holes and
can be fitted with
screwdriver
attachments.
l Stick-it stuff—bottle of carpenter’s glue
and rolls of electrical, masking and duct tape.

St. Patrick’s Day is March 17th
Did you know?
l Green is associated with St. Patrick’s Day because it is the
color of spring, Ireland and the shamrock.
l Leprechauns are also associated with St. Patrick’s Day,
although the only reason they are is because they’re Irish.
l People give Saint Patrick credit for chasing all the snakes out of Ireland.
The truth is that snakes are not indigenous to Ireland.

Directions
Melt the butter in a skillet over medium-
low heat.
Place the slices of bread in the skillet,
allowing it to soak up all the butter.
Spread the mustard on both slices, then
cut the cheese into thin slices and lay it
on the bread. Allow the cheese to melt,
then bring the two slices together and
check both sides to make sure they’re
crisp and golden brown and the cheese
is melted.
Ingredients
2 Tablespoons butter
2 slices rye bread
2 tablespoons Irish Mustard
(Dijon Is fine, too)
2 ounces, aged Irish Cheddar
Small pickles, for serving
Transfer the sandwich to a cutting board
and slice it in half. Serve it with small
pickles while the cheese is hot and
gooey.
Variations
Use pumpernickel bread or
pumpernickel-rye swirl bread for a nice,
deep color.
Add tomato slices or thinly sliced corned
beef to the sandwich.
