- Thank you for the opportunity to be here today. This is the third year that I have had the privilege to speak at GreenFest here in Seattle
- Followed by two years of dealing with the economic fallout. And just when a recovery is about to happen, BOOM!
- Here in the Puget Sound Region, we are an elite community of people when it comes to all things green and sustainable. We are obsessive recyclers. We like to brew our own biodiesel. We love to “get all dressed up in our fancy florescent colored tights” and ride our bikes, regardless of the weather conditions. We also recognize that the planet is heating up far faster than scientist a decade ago have been predicting. It’s not a matter of “if” global sea-level will rise. It’s not a matter of if we will see a rise in the amount of destructive atmospheric events. The question is how will we adapt. How will we adapt as individuals, how will a rapidly will the cultures of the world adapt to this human made catastrophe, being lead in great part by the United States.Last week, my good friend, heck everybody’s “good friend” Van Jones challenged the residents of this region that now is the time to accelerate our actions. To no longer continue with our talk. Our quest for consensus, but to get moving now with respect to addressing climate change by becoming a carbon neutral city.
- This is a historical record of the Earth’s mean temperature going back 1K years. We see a stark uptick in the Earth’s temperature starting around the Civil War in 1945. We see upticks in the 1920’s, 40’s and 70’s. Then we see a HUGE swing in 2007 rise in temperature. 2007 was the hottest year on record. 12 of the hottest years ever recorded have been in the last 13 years. If we look at the green line to which is the best of the worst case scenarios, the planets temperature will rise almost 5 degrees Fahrenheit on average.
- Let’s take a look at the projected impacts of climate change on our food, water, ecosystems and weather. At 5 degrees F, we could see palm trees growing in Seattle, water supplies become threatened and weather gets whacky. What’s really the scariest channel on TV? The Weather Channel.
- We are all multiple drug dependent addicts.We are drilling and digging deeper and deeper into the Earth to feed our addiction to dirty fossil fuels. Not only is the writing on the wall, but we now see it every day on the nightly news. When is enough, enough?
- We see how the addiction effects our economy and by volatile rise and fall of the stock markets and the seasonal cost of fuels to drive our vehicles and heat our homes. Not to mention our competiveness as a nation is starting to decline. As we expeditiously give away our financial treasures to counties that don’t have our best interests in mind, and in fact, want to destroy us.Just a couple of weeks ago former Washington state governor, now US Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke said that we could fall behind China and other countries in clean energy technology.My fellow Seattleites, Washingtonians, Cascadian’s…it’s time to stop the madness.

- Moontown Foundation is a non-profit 501 C3 organization that I founded in October 2006 to address the issues of environmental, social and economic inequality. Our mission is to help people protect the planet and achieve social and economic prosperity, or the triple bottom line.
- For the past three years we have introduced dozens of teens and young adults to conservation careers to include:TransportationBuilding ScienceWind PowerSolar PowerBiofuelsAnd Sustainable Agriculture
- We take an integrated, whole systems approach to developing replicable and scalable solutions regarding sustainability. Currently, we are working with the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction on K-12 sustainability curriculum.
- The SWITCH Project is a 36-week green career readiness program designed to prepare economically challenged and socially disconnected young urban adults for entry-level green careers.

- We need to have an approach to education that teaches environmental, social and economic sustainability K through 20. We also need to encourage lifelong learning and that there are multiple pathways to personal and professional success is our country. We need more skilled trades professional. People who can build and manufacture things.It’s important to tell our youth that it’s ok to attend a community college or vocational school. It’s were people learn just in time skills and earn certifications.And at the four year level, we have to graduate more people with Masters and PhD’s in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.
- If we don’t hold our elected officials feet to the fire, we will get bad government. It is imperative that we rework our legislative policies
- 80% of innovations fail. Traditional methods of research can be slow, un-engaging and out of touch. Strategy has to be enduring despite a rapidly changing landscape. New thinking and new trends are constantly being generated and there is an increasing need for individuals and communities to stay dynamic and in tune with the outer world.
- Citizens have to demand their elected officials and government agencies to create policies, update and establish codes, and support programs designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Specific emphasis ought to be made toward buildings (industrial, commercial, and residential) and ground transportation. We have to get people out of their cars.
- Case in point, seven generations ago in African American’s in this nation were considered property at worse or 3/5ths a person at best. And today, we have a brotha’, kinda nerdy, kinda’ stiff

- According to Dr. RK Pachauri, Director of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a collaborative of 2000 scientist around the globe, has found clear and unarguable evidence that “If there is no action before 2012, that’s too late. What we do in the next two to three years will determine our future...”
- Followed by de-escalating conflict
- At Moontown, we believe that the one place we can all make a difference in the amount of GHG we put into the atmosphere is at home. - When it comes to removing barriers which prevent people from succeeding in the work place, effective communication is one of the first issues we have to overcome.
- Then, there are a number of basic technical skills that we teach to include:Basic plumbing as it relates to water conservation.
- Basic electrical and saving money on electricity bills
- And how to reduce the air flow into a house and increase the comfortability of ones home through caulking and weather stripping.
- Education of the issues and the environment are also critical areas for Moontown. Our message is simple, to tell people that the planet is heating up and that time is not on our side.
- So what’s the big idea? Actually, we want to share 5 ideas with you.Notice the politically correct CFL.
- I moved to Seattle 21-years ago this month from Alabama to become an environmental activist. As you might be able to imagine, a bright-eyed, idealistic African American environmentalist with a funny hair cut living in Alabama is a bit of an anomaly. In fact, my mentors were all dead authors like Thoreau, Abbey, and Carson. Anyhow with a goal of going to work for Greenpeace or EarthFirst! As I was enamoured by the idea of taking direction action to stop environmental degradation. I moved to Seattle and on the third day in town, I got a job with the Washington Public Research Group (better known as WashPIRG).
- I’d like to set the tone of my presentation this afternoon by sharing one of my favorite quotes with you from the Chinese military general, strategist and philosopher Sun Tzu, who is commonly recognized as the author of the Art of War 2500 years ago.
