Project Lax and Learn
Mission Statement
Lacrosse is a game we love, but it is much more than just a game to us, it is a culture.
This culture is one of a student-athlete who is involved in the community and
represents himself with integrity and responsibility. The members of this program
understand that academics are the #1 priority. As student-athletes of this
institution, we wish to relay the importance of learning and organization to High
school students before they enter the world of higher education. We see this
program as an opportunity to change the stigma of lacrosse players on campus and
give back to the people that have supported us. On a local level we strive to build
relationships with the community of Wooster and hopefully try to bring the
Wooster population and the students at the College of Wooster together through the
game we love. Internationally, we want to grow the game in East Asia, primarily in
South Korea. Our group member Wooseong Seol, runs a lacrosse camp there and
wants to incorporate Wooster lacrosse into his organization. We are working with
Lax.com to supply his clinic with the necessary equipment to encourage kids to play.
Our program is very simple, we will hold clinics every Sunday during the semester
for High school and middle school students that will last two hours. The first hour
will be a tutoring and mentoring session for the players involved. Our group will be
hands on with helping the kids with organization skills, time management and
homework. We will help out in areas they are having difficulty in and give them tips on
how we balance the work load in college. We will have reports of each player and show
the progress they have made both on the field and in the classroom. This is the most
critical part of the program. We need to stress the importance of the “student comes
before athlete” philosophy. We not only want to grow the game, but more
importantly, teach the players that academics are their number one priority.
The second half of the clinic will be instructional based lacrosse organization, where
teaching and helping each player improve their lacrosse skills are the primary focus
areas. This will include the individual fundamentals of the game such as catching,
throwing, shooting and ground balls. Then we will transition into bringing the
players and showing them our philosophy as College of Wooster lacrosse players.
We want to share our experiences and what it is like to play lacrosse at the
collegiate level.
On a local level, we strive to create bonds with the Wooster High School students
and their families in an effort to decrease the gap between the College of Wooster
students and the local town people. We hope to encourage more gatherings through
the game of lacrosse. Our group aims to support the local high school at all home
games for the up coming season.
On an international level, we are working closely with Woo’s organization and really
committing ourselves to do whatever we can to promote the game abroad. In order
to do this, we have decided to donate our excess equipment to his cause and reach
out to Lax.com to support this organization. We have also been asked to provide
instructional videos in various aspects of the game, ranging from stringing lacrosse
heads to how to correctly execute dodges.
Our coaches all have experience in coaching at this age group. We have coached
indoor, field, recreational, select and summer lacrosse. Our team has a wide array of
skills sets and coaching ability. This stems from our love of the game and our
knowledge of what it was like to be at that age. Personally, I know that I looked up to
my younger coaches, because they were able to relate to me and I would want to
listen to them. We want to mentor them, we want to create bonds with them and
become a team Together in Effort, Attitude and Mission.
Academic Goals
Most importantly is exposing the game and the culture of the student athlete on a
local and international level. We aim to bring the Community of Wooster closer
together with the College of Wooster through a game that we love and share in
common. We want to support Woo’s organization because we believe that what he
is doing is what we are doing here. We both want to expose everyone to the game
and inspire them to play.
The members of this program will be assigned to a group of the players and develop
a spreadsheet that track their academic and athletic performance. Every week we
will evaluate test scores, exams and projects and record their progress. We aim to
improve their self-confidence by showing the progress they make as the program
progresses. After each scrimmage we will record stats and break down film to show
what they can improve on. On the international level, I have been asked to make
videos demonstrating technique for the fundamentals of the game. We plan to create
a donation of our old equipment and equipment supplied by Lax.com that kids
enrolled in Woo’s organization will be able to use and learn how to play with.
The house will be our center for operation, assembling all of the group members so
that we can agree on the techniques and values that we are instilling in the kids. It
will give us an area where we can break down film and be critical of what each
player’s strengths and weaknesses. A house will bring us group members closer
together so that we can show the importance of being apart of a team. A team is not
just a group of guys that you play with, but a family that you care for.
Our goal for the house is to increase our GPA by a minimum of .3. We aim to have
our best academic year so far at Wooster. To accomplish this goal, during syllabus
week, we will require everyone in the house to write down every assignment that is
known to us at the time into a calendar. This way we can hold each other
accountable for assignments and encourage each other to study for up coming
exams. We will hold study groups before exams and collaborate on the best way to
present the information to each other. This will give the members of the house tools
to succeed.
CrisisManagementPlan
Most of the members of this house are all on the same team and have formed a very
strong bond with one another. That being said, if a problem arises we will address it
immediately. The first course of action will be for the people in question to resolve
their issues on their own. If this problem is still not resolved we will have a meeting
and weigh the options and see what the best course of action is. This could range
from a simple compromise to a room switch or possibly a removal from the house
for serious issues. If the problem cannot be resolved inside the house we are more
than willing to involve any authority figure to intervene and go through proper
course of action
Each member of the house and their roommate will be responsible for their
individual room and pick-up. The housework such as trash pick-up, vacuuming and
general housework will be evenly distributed among all inhabitants of the house.
We will switch up roles every week so everyone has equal responsibility. If any
damages occur we will report them to the designated person in charge. The program
members and I are more than willing to cooperate and all pitch-in any dues required
in order to pay for the damage.
