VECMAP™ is a One-stop-shop for vector mapping. It provides a seamless system and service that integrates the entire process from cost-efficient sampling to advance spatial modelling, in order to produce area-wide risk maps of disease vector presence and abundance into a single package that can be used by a wide range of practitioners either on their own or supported by experts who are acknowledged leaders in the field. The software was developed jointly with ERGO (Oxford, UK) and MEDES (Toulouse, France) with co-funding from the ESA-IAP program (ESTEC, Netherlands).
2. Mission statement
Developinnovative spatial decision support systems to bridgethe gap between
research and decision making:
• Integrating space technology applications
• Optimizing health information systems
• Planning precision pestmanagement
Weaim at producing economically sustainable systems which:
• Generate high quality data
• Save timeand reducecosts
9. The problem
Need for precise information on distribution, abundance and spread of disease vectors
BUT: Field surveys are labour intensive and expensive
Cost can be reduced by combining strategic sampling and spatial models using remote
sensing data
BUT: Requires expertise and access to state of the art tools
11. Proposedsolution

19. The problem
Globalization and climate change has increased the risk for emergence of animal diseases and
zoonoses worldwide.
Outbreaks of emerging animal diseases, particularly those harmfulto humans (zoonoses), can
cause considerable economic and social upheaval.
Because of their possible devastating consequences, emerging disease outbreaks require
prompt risk managementdecisions.
Controlling emerging animal disease epidemics is very resource intensive and requires
operational contingency plans, humanresource development, facilitated information
management, and controlled risk communication.
20. The solution
VETGEOTOOLS™is a space-time information system that integrates all available data
sources in onedecision information environment. Thesystem provides a framework
for collecting newdisease outbreak and back-tracing data, and conducting complex
database queries that providethe necessaryinformation for contingency planning and
decision making.
VETGEOTOOLS™combines a relational database with a GIS serverto allow an easily
updatable space-time representation of the accumulated information, which can be
analyzed and disseminated through web-services.
23. The problem
In Emerging economies livestock is an important resource that contributes to food
security, the quality of life and the development of the economy including
international trade.
Emerging economies therefore require good quality data on animal health and
production.
Whilst many efforts have been committed to collect data on animal health, there is a
need for state of the art tools to plan and implement cost efficient:
• Livestock distribution surveys and model/ analyze livestock distribution patterns.
• Animal health surveys for early disease detection and to model/ analyze disease
patterns and spread.
24. The solution
VGTropics is a support system to enhance existing national epidemiological surveillance
systems by improving communication and providing spatio-temporal tools for decision-
making.
VGTropics provides the:
• Infrastructure to strengthen veterinary information collection networks using GPS, GSM
and SatCom,
• Tools to plan livestock surveys and model livestock distributions using Satellite Imagery,
and
• Tools to conduct epidemiological surveys, spatial analyses and risk mapping.
In addition VGTropics enables:
• Monitoring of network performance indicators, and
• Automated feed back and reporting.
