UXHK has been putting efforts to protect environment; they suggested us to bring our own
water bottles, removed unnecessary decorations to reduce trash, and made the event quite
minimal. They were also passionate about promoting local culture, they provided local
snacks and dimsum.

There was not clear theme this year, but all talks were related to “Design for good”. I feel UX
community has evolved and we are not only talking about methodologies and practical tips
anymore, we started to speak up about designer’s ethics, responsibilities, being humane and
thinking of consequences.
More than words - how language shapes environments we create

This talk was about how to design organization with treating each
member as a human, not resource or a part of a system.
Organization is a “Complex adaptive system”, it means it has
dynamic interactions in it, which is not simply consisting of the sums
of the parts. That’s why corporations can be evil or inhuman even
though it is consisting of human beings.
So what should we do to nurture and develop organization? We
should consider culture, learning, diversity, commitment, passion,
purpose etc.
Create transparency and autonomy, use language to build trust and
support growth, and make meanings.

He started his talk with breathing and meditation to “Be here” “Now,
this instant”
What can we do with Love? We can make choice and think of the
impact of the decision. We can change the world. We should
intentionally love what we’re doing. We should look at our work
thought the lens of love.
Love yourself. We need to know when to walk away. We have
options such as “Yes, if…” and “No, but…” Make space but still care
for others.
As an individual, we have the power to alter the behavior of others.
We can build advocate, give small nudges to others over time, and
shift the world.

Susan Wolfe
The title of this talk is tweaking the name of one of the most famous UX
book “Don’t make me think” by Steve Krug, she made us think how to
conduct good UX works.
She presented 12 maxims;
1. You have to go through the squiggles to get through the line
2. It doesn’t have to be perfect to start sharing
3. A pencil is also a tool
4. Get the right design before you get the design right
5. People are people
6. Clients are people too
7. The soft skills are the hard skills
8. Exact words matter
9. It depends
10. Your brain is your best tool
11. Regardless of your background, you have relevant UX skills
12. Hold hands
Ethics of design
Chris Marmo
Ethics of design – it’s more like designer’s ethics. What we
designers can do better for good? And what is good? Being good is
such a complicated topic and there is no clear answer.
This is his framework of design ethics;
• Positionality: What am I in this relation to this work?
• Participation: Who participates and how?
• Representation: What happens with what I do when I leave?
Design has moral consequences, so be deliberate about your
actions and choices by continually interrogating your practices.
We can also develop our own framework.
DAY 2 WORKSHOPS

  • 2. 8-9 Mar 2018@Innocentre UXHK has been putting efforts to protect environment; they suggested us to bring our own water bottles, removed unnecessary decorations to reduce trash, and made the event quite minimal. They were also passionate about promoting local culture, they provided local snacks and dimsum.
  • 3. DAY 1 SPEAKERS Alberta Soranzo Matthew Oliphant Susan Wolfe Chris Marmo Lloyds Banking Group Studio VO OE Strategy PaperGiant There was not clear theme this year, but all talks were related to “Design for good”. I feel UX community has evolved and we are not only talking about methodologies and practical tips anymore, we started to speak up about designer’s ethics, responsibilities, being humane and thinking of consequences.
  • 4. More than words - how language shapes environments we create Alberta Soranzo This talk was about how to design organization with treating each member as a human, not resource or a part of a system. Organization is a “Complex adaptive system”, it means it has dynamic interactions in it, which is not simply consisting of the sums of the parts. That’s why corporations can be evil or inhuman even though it is consisting of human beings. So what should we do to nurture and develop organization? We should consider culture, learning, diversity, commitment, passion, purpose etc. Create transparency and autonomy, use language to build trust and support growth, and make meanings.
  • 5. Make with love Matthew Oliphant He started his talk with breathing and meditation to “Be here” “Now, this instant” What can we do with Love? We can make choice and think of the impact of the decision. We can change the world. We should intentionally love what we’re doing. We should look at our work thought the lens of love. Love yourself. We need to know when to walk away. We have options such as “Yes, if…” and “No, but…” Make space but still care for others. As an individual, we have the power to alter the behavior of others. We can build advocate, give small nudges to others over time, and shift the world.
  • 6. Make me think Susan Wolfe The title of this talk is tweaking the name of one of the most famous UX book “Don’t make me think” by Steve Krug, she made us think how to conduct good UX works. She presented 12 maxims; 1. You have to go through the squiggles to get through the line 2. It doesn’t have to be perfect to start sharing 3. A pencil is also a tool 4. Get the right design before you get the design right 5. People are people 6. Clients are people too 7. The soft skills are the hard skills 8. Exact words matter 9. It depends 10. Your brain is your best tool 11. Regardless of your background, you have relevant UX skills 12. Hold hands
  • 7. Ethics of design Chris Marmo Ethics of design – it’s more like designer’s ethics. What we designers can do better for good? And what is good? Being good is such a complicated topic and there is no clear answer. This is his framework of design ethics; • Positionality: What am I in this relation to this work? • Participation: Who participates and how? • Representation: What happens with what I do when I leave? Design has moral consequences, so be deliberate about your actions and choices by continually interrogating your practices. We can also develop our own framework.
