Hi everybody! As you can see, I will talk about What are Video Game Oldies? You would ask, why do I say « Video Game Oldies ». In fact, Oldies can also be radio format, but I don’t know this subject very well .
So I want to ask you first « For you, what does Oldies mean? »… If you can « oldies », you have « old »… So we’re talking here about old video games!
Now, we can ask why inventing that word Oldies and what Oldies are famous for?... It’s simply because they are fun, they are addictive!
Let’s go into details: In fact, it’s not only the fun that let people talk about Oldies. It’s also because it remembers us how the time went through so quickly! Indeed, video games show how technology progresses so fast and it remembers us kind souvenirs too…
But if the word Oldies exists, it’s because the oldies come back! How? By these 4 points: remakes, free flash games, translation and fan translation of old games and abandonware… Let see each them one by one.
The remakes are the more common now. In every new console, you have remakes! The better example are coming from Nintendo and especially with Super Mario Bros. Here the example of this old good Super Mario from NES and it’s remake on Wii… Well, you have to know for Super Mario it’s not old at all to do remakes. You have tons of remakes of Super Mario on SNES, Gameboy Advance, Nintendo DS and so on!
Another interesting case is the flash games. A lot of old games are now free but on the web with the flash technology. Thanks to that you can have decent graphics and you can break scores! Here is the case of Prince of Persia…
Another case that is less famous is the translation of old games. Thanks to either fan or either consoles like Nintendo DS, we have old japanese games who are translated in english… Here is one of the first I knew: Final Fantasy V translation. First translated by fan and then coming out on Playstation in english after more than 10 years of existence…
At last, you have the abandonware. There are the ones that are truly oldies because you simply take back the old game… which is entered in public domain! So you don’t have to pay for it… However, most of them have compatibility issues… but again fans are amazing and correct you that in an instant! A very great site about abandonware is the Home of The Under Dogs.
