The document discusses various fasting practices of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). It provides hadith narrations about the Prophet fasting on Mondays and Thursdays, the first 10 days of Muharram, Fridays, and the "white days" of each lunar month. It also mentions hadith stating the Prophet used to fast in Sha'ban and encourage fasting before Ramadan, but not in the last half of Sha'ban. The document seeks to explain the type of love required for the Prophet according to hadith and verses from the Quran.

2. The Prophet is more worthy of the believers than themselves,
and his wives are [in the position of] their mothers. And those
of [blood] relationship are more entitled [to inheritance] in the
decree of Allah than the [other] believers and the emigrants,
except that you may do to your close associates a kindness
[through bequest]. That was in the Book inscribed. (33:6)

It is reported on the authority of Anas that the Messenger of Allah

No bondsman believes, and, in the hadith narrated by Abdul Warith, no
person believes, till I am dearer to him than the members of his household,
his wealth and the whole of mankind.
(Sahih Muslim)
5. O Prophet, tell them plainly, "If your fathers and your sons, and your brothers
and your wives, and your near and dear ones and the wealth which you have
acquired and the trade you fear may decline and the homes which delight
you-if all these things-are dearer to you than Allah and His Messenger and the

(Sahih al-Bukhari)
17. Fasting in Ramadan
O you who have believed! decreed upon you is
fasting as it was decreed upon those before you
that you may become righteous (2:183)
18.
19. The month of Ramadan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur'an, a
guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion.
So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and
whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other days.
Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and
[wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that
[to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful.
(2:185)
Who should be fasting?
20. What else is special about
Ramadan?
Indeed, We sent the Qur'an down during the Night of
Decree. And what can make you know what is the
Night of Decree? The Night of Decree is better than
a thousand months. (97:1-3)
21. Because of this
importance of Ramadan
the Salaf used to pray

Narrated By Ibn Umar : I heard Allah's Apostle
"When you see the crescent (of the month of Ramadan), start
fasting, and when you see the crescent (of the month of Shawwal),
stop fasting; and if the sky is overcast (and you can't see It) then
regard the crescent (month) of Ramadan (as of 30 days)".
(Al-Bukhari: 1901)
25.
26. When you see the crescent, say
“Allah is the greatest. O Allah, let the
crescent loom above us in safety, faith,
peace, and Islam, and in agreement with
all that You love and pleases You. Our
Lord and your Lord is Allah.”
27.
28. The uniqueness of Ramadan
It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of
“When Ramadan comes, the gates of Paradise are opened and the
gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are put in chains.”
(Agreed upon)
29. What is Ramadan?
• Ramadan is a period of fasting, reflection, devotion,
generosity and sacrifice observed by Muslims around the
world. While major holidays of other faiths have largely
become commercialized events, Ramadan retains its intense
spiritual meaning.
• The word "Ramadan" comes from the Arabic root word for
"parched thirst" and "sun-baked ground“. It is expressive of
the hunger and thirst felt by those who spend the month in
fasting. As opposed to other holidays, when people often
indulge, Ramadan is by nature a time of sacrifice.
30. Fasting is a pillar of Islam

It is narrated on the authority of Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah
“Ask me (about matters pertaining to religion), but they (the Companions of
the Holy Prophet) were too much overawed out of profound respect for
him to ask him (anything). In the meanwhile a man came there, and sat
near his knees and said:
Messenger of Allah, what al-lslam is? -to which he (the Holy Prophet) replied:
You must not associate anything with Allah, and establish prayer, pay the
poor-rate (Zakat) and observe (the fasts ) of Ramadan. He said: You (have)
told the truth…….”
(Sahih Muslim )
31.
32. Cont.
Ibn ‘Abbas said:
‘Islam and the principles of religion
are tied together by three things:
Witnessing that there is no deity
except Allah, the prayer, and fasting
during Ramadan.’
33. The importance of Ramadan
Waathilah ibn al-Asqa’ (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
The Messenger of Allaah (may peace and blessings of Allah be upon
him) said:
“The Scriptures of Ibraaheem were sent down on the first of the
month of Ramadaan. The Tawraat was sent down on the sixth of
Ramadaan. The Injeel was sent down on the thirteenth of
Ramadaan. The Zaboor was sent down on the eighteenth of
Ramadaan, and the Qur’aan was sent down on the twenty-fourth
of Ramadaan.

Narrated By Abu Hurairah : Allah's Apostle said, "Allah said, 'All the deeds of Adam's sons (people)
are for them, except fasting which is for Me, and I will give the reward for it.' Fasting is a shield or
protection from the fire and from committing sins. If one of you is fasting, he should avoid sexual
relation with his wife and quarrelling, and if somebody should fight or quarrel with him, he should
say, 'I am fasting.' By Him in Whose Hands my soul is' The unpleasant smell coming out from the
mouth of a fasting person is better in the sight of Allah than the smell of musk. There are two
pleasures for the fasting person, one at the time of breaking his fast, and the other at the time when
he will meet his Lord; then he will be pleased because of his fasting.“

amongst the people, and he used to be more so in the month of Ramadan
when Gabriel visited him, and Gabriel used to meet him on every night of
Ramadan till the end of the month. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم used to recite the
Holy Qur'an to Gabriel, and when Gabriel met him, he used to be more
generous than a fast wind (which causes rain and welfare). (Al-Bukhari)

47. Preaching
O Messenger! deliver what has been revealed to

their Creator, and recognize that everything we have
in this life is a blessing from Him.
• Through increased charity, Muslims develop feelings
of generosity and good-will toward others.
80. • Through self-control, a Muslim practices good manners,
good speech, and good habits
• Through changing routines, Muslims have a chance to
establish more healthy lifestyle habits, particularly with
regards to diet and smoking

strengthen the bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood, in their
own communities and throughout the world
81. Strive harder for good deeds in this
month, such as:
• optional prayers,

Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (Allah be pleased with him) reported:
The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) observed i'tikaf in the middle ten days of
Ramadan to seek Lailat-ul-Qadr before it was made manifest to him. When (these nights)
were over, he commanded to strike the tent. Then it was made manifest to him that (Lailat-ul-
Qadr) was in the last ten nights (of Ramadan), and commanded to pitch the tent (again).
He then came to the people and said: O people, Lailat-ul-Qadr was made manifest to me and
I came out to inform you about it that two persons came contending with each other and
there was a devil along with them and I forgot it. So seek it in the last ten nights of Ramadan.
Seek it on the ninth, on the seventh and on the fifth. I (one of the narrators) said: Abu Sa'id,
you know more than us about numbers. He said: Yes, indeed we have better right than you. I
said: What is this ninth, seventh, and fifth? He said: When twenty-one (nights are over) and
the twenty-second begins, it is the ninth, and when twenty-three (nights) are over, that
which follows (the last night) is the seventh, and when twenty-five nights are over, what
follows it is fifth. Ibn Khallad said: Instead of the word Yahliqan (contending), he said
Yakhtasiman, (they are disputing). (Sahih Muslim)
