The Prophet is more worthy of the believers than themselves,
and his wives are [in the position of] their mothers. And those
of [blood] relationship are more entitled [to inheritance] in the
decree of Allah than the [other] believers and the emigrants,
except that you may do to your close associates a kindness
[through bequest]. That was in the Book inscribed. (33:6)

It is reported on the authority of Anas that the Messenger of Allah
No bondsman believes, and, in the hadith narrated by Abdul Warith, no
person believes, till I am dearer to him than the members of his household,
his wealth and the whole of mankind.
(Sahih Muslim)
O Prophet, tell them plainly, "If your fathers and your sons, and your brothers
and your wives, and your near and dear ones and the wealth which you have
acquired and the trade you fear may decline and the homes which delight
you-if all these things-are dearer to you than Allah and His Messenger and the
struggle in His Way, then wait till Allah passes His judgment on you; for Allah
does not guide the wicked people" . (9:24)

We were with the Prophet ( ) صلى الله عليه وسلمand he was holding the hand of `Umar bin Al-
Khattab. `Umar said to Him, "O Allah's Messenger ( !) صلى الله عليه وسلمYou are dearer to me
than everything except my own self." The Prophet ( ) صلى الله عليه وسلمsaid, "No, by Him in
Whose Hand my soul is, (you will not have complete faith) till I am dearer to you than
your own self." Then `Umar said to him, "However, now, by Allah, you are dearer to
me than my own self."
The Prophet ( ) صلى الله عليه وسلمsaid, "Now, O `Umar, (now you are a believer).

What is the love for the
prophet ?

Fasting before Ramadan
Narrated Abu Huraira:
The Prophet said,
"None of you should fast a day or two before the month of Ramadan
unless he has the habit of fasting (Nawafil) (and if his fasting
coincides with that day) then he can fast that day."
(Sahih al-Bukhari)
Fasting in Ramadan
O you who have believed! decreed upon you is
fasting as it was decreed upon those before you
that you may become righteous (2:183)
The month of Ramadan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur'an, a
guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion.
So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and
whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other days.
Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and
[wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that
[to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful.
(2:185)
Who should be fasting?
What else is special about
Ramadan?
Indeed, We sent the Qur'an down during the Night of
Decree. And what can make you know what is the
Night of Decree? The Night of Decree is better than
a thousand months. (97:1-3)
Because of this
importance of Ramadan
the Salaf used to pray
Make Dua
Start counting the
days;
start preparing
yourself
Narrated By Ibn Umar : I heard Allah's Apostle
"When you see the crescent (of the month of Ramadan), start
fasting, and when you see the crescent (of the month of Shawwal),
stop fasting; and if the sky is overcast (and you can't see It) then
regard the crescent (month) of Ramadan (as of 30 days)".
(Al-Bukhari: 1901)
When you see the crescent, say
“Allah is the greatest. O Allah, let the
crescent loom above us in safety, faith,
peace, and Islam, and in agreement with
all that You love and pleases You. Our
Lord and your Lord is Allah.”
The uniqueness of Ramadan

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of
“When Ramadan comes, the gates of Paradise are opened and the
gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are put in chains.”
(Agreed upon)
What is Ramadan?
• Ramadan is a period of fasting, reflection, devotion,
generosity and sacrifice observed by Muslims around the
world. While major holidays of other faiths have largely
become commercialized events, Ramadan retains its intense
spiritual meaning.
• The word "Ramadan" comes from the Arabic root word for
"parched thirst" and "sun-baked ground“. It is expressive of
the hunger and thirst felt by those who spend the month in
fasting. As opposed to other holidays, when people often
indulge, Ramadan is by nature a time of sacrifice.
Fasting is a pillar of Islam
It is narrated on the authority of Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah
“Ask me (about matters pertaining to religion), but they (the Companions of
the Holy Prophet) were too much overawed out of profound respect for
him to ask him (anything). In the meanwhile a man came there, and sat
near his knees and said:
Messenger of Allah, what al-lslam is? -to which he (the Holy Prophet) replied:
You must not associate anything with Allah, and establish prayer, pay the
poor-rate (Zakat) and observe (the fasts ) of Ramadan. He said: You (have)
told the truth…….”
(Sahih Muslim )
Cont.
Ibn ‘Abbas said:
‘Islam and the principles of religion
are tied together by three things:
Witnessing that there is no deity
except Allah, the prayer, and fasting
during Ramadan.’
The importance of Ramadan
Waathilah ibn al-Asqa’ (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
The Messenger of Allaah (may peace and blessings of Allah be upon
him) said:
“The Scriptures of Ibraaheem were sent down on the first of the
month of Ramadaan. The Tawraat was sent down on the sixth of
Ramadaan. The Injeel was sent down on the thirteenth of
Ramadaan. The Zaboor was sent down on the eighteenth of
Ramadaan, and the Qur’aan was sent down on the twenty-fourth
of Ramadaan.

protection from the fire and from committing sins. If one of you is fasting, he should avoid sexual
relation with his wife and quarrelling, and if somebody should fight or quarrel with him, he should
say, 'I am fasting.' By Him in Whose Hands my soul is' The unpleasant smell coming out from the
mouth of a fasting person is better in the sight of Allah than the smell of musk. There are two
pleasures for the fasting person, one at the time of breaking his fast, and the other at the time when
he will meet his Lord; then he will be pleased because of his fasting.“

Certainly did Allah confer [great] favor upon the
believers when He sent among them a Messenger

error. (3:164)
Those to whom We have given the Book recite it
with its true recital. They [are the ones who]
believe in it. And whoever disbelieves in it - it is
they who are the losers.

Preaching
O Messenger! deliver what has been revealed to
you from your Lord; and if you do it not, then you
have not delivered His message, and Allah will
protect you from the people; surely Allah will not
guide the unbelieving people.

Preaching
So, in case they turn away, then surely
you have only (to deliver) the evident
proclamation.

Implementation
And if the people of the townships had believed
and kept from evil, surely We should have
opened for them blessings from the sky and
from the earth. But (unto every messenger)
they gave the lie, and so We seized them on
account of what they used to earn. (7:96)

Spiritual benefits of fasting
• It is a reason for the cultivation of at-Taqwaa in
the hearts, and it prevents the limbs from
committing impermissible acts
• It accustoms a person to having patience and
being tolerant
• Performing acts of obedience are made easy for
the fasting person.
Cont.
• Fasting softens the heart towards remembering
Allah
• It cuts a person off from that which busies him
from the remembrance of Allah
• It is possible that fasting creates
a continuous love for obedience to Allah and hate
for disobedience to Him
Social and psychological benefits
of fasting
• Through fasting, a Muslim experiences hunger and
thirst, and sympathizes with those in the world who
have little to eat every day.
• Through increased devotion, Muslims feel closer to
their Creator, and recognize that everything we have
in this life is a blessing from Him.
• Through increased charity, Muslims develop feelings
of generosity and good-will toward others.
• Through self-control, a Muslim practices good manners,
good speech, and good habits
• Through changing routines, Muslims have a chance to
establish more healthy lifestyle habits, particularly with
regards to diet and smoking
• Through family and community gatherings, Muslims
strengthen the bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood, in their
own communities and throughout the world
Strive harder for good deeds in this
month, such as:
• optional prayers,
• reading, reflecting and learning the Quran;
• praising, thanking, and glorifying Allaah;
• seeking his forgiveness,
• supplicating,
• ordering with good and forbidding the evil,
• calling others to Allah the Mighty and Sublime,
• comforting the poor and labours,
• striving hard towards obeying the parents,
• enjoining the ties of kinship,
• being hospitable to the neighbors,
• visiting the sick, and performing the many other acts of good and
virtue

Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (Allah be pleased with him) reported:
The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) observed i'tikaf in the middle ten days of
Ramadan to seek Lailat-ul-Qadr before it was made manifest to him. When (these nights)
were over, he commanded to strike the tent. Then it was made manifest to him that (Lailat-ul-
Qadr) was in the last ten nights (of Ramadan), and commanded to pitch the tent (again).
He then came to the people and said: O people, Lailat-ul-Qadr was made manifest to me and
I came out to inform you about it that two persons came contending with each other and
there was a devil along with them and I forgot it. So seek it in the last ten nights of Ramadan.
Seek it on the ninth, on the seventh and on the fifth. I (one of the narrators) said: Abu Sa'id,
you know more than us about numbers. He said: Yes, indeed we have better right than you. I
said: What is this ninth, seventh, and fifth? He said: When twenty-one (nights are over) and
the twenty-second begins, it is the ninth, and when twenty-three (nights) are over, that
which follows (the last night) is the seventh, and when twenty-five nights are over, what
follows it is fifth. Ibn Khallad said: Instead of the word Yahliqan (contending), he said
Yakhtasiman, (they are disputing). (Sahih Muslim)

  • 29. What is Ramadan? • Ramadan is a period of fasting, reflection, devotion, generosity and sacrifice observed by Muslims around the world. While major holidays of other faiths have largely become commercialized events, Ramadan retains its intense spiritual meaning. • The word "Ramadan" comes from the Arabic root word for "parched thirst" and "sun-baked ground“. It is expressive of the hunger and thirst felt by those who spend the month in fasting. As opposed to other holidays, when people often indulge, Ramadan is by nature a time of sacrifice.

In the meanwhile a man came there, and sat near his knees and said: Messenger of Allah, what al-lslam is? -to which he (the Holy Prophet) replied: You must not associate anything with Allah, and establish prayer, pay the poor-rate (Zakat) and observe (the fasts ) of Ramadan. He said: You (have) told the truth…….” (Sahih Muslim )
  • 31.
  • 32. Cont. Ibn ‘Abbas said: ‘Islam and the principles of religion are tied together by three things: Witnessing that there is no deity except Allah, the prayer, and fasting during Ramadan.’
  • 33. Fasting is a shield or protection from the fire and from committing sins. If one of you is fasting, he should avoid sexual relation with his wife and quarrelling, and if somebody should fight or quarrel with him, he should say, 'I am fasting.' By Him in Whose Hands my soul is' The unpleasant smell coming out from the mouth of a fasting person is better in the sight of Allah than the smell of musk. There are two pleasures for the fasting person, one at the time of breaking his fast, and the other at the time when he will meet his Lord; then he will be pleased because of his fasting.“ (Al-Bukhari)

Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) observed i'tikaf in the middle ten days of Ramadan to seek Lailat-ul-Qadr before it was made manifest to him. When (these nights) were over, he commanded to strike the tent. Then it was made manifest to him that (Lailat-ul- Qadr) was in the last ten nights (of Ramadan), and commanded to pitch the tent (again). He then came to the people and said: O people, Lailat-ul-Qadr was made manifest to me and I came out to inform you about it that two persons came contending with each other and there was a devil along with them and I forgot it. So seek it in the last ten nights of Ramadan. Seek it on the ninth, on the seventh and on the fifth. I (one of the narrators) said: Abu Sa'id, you know more than us about numbers. He said: Yes, indeed we have better right than you. I said: What is this ninth, seventh, and fifth? He said: When twenty-one (nights are over) and the twenty-second begins, it is the ninth, and when twenty-three (nights) are over, that which follows (the last night) is the seventh, and when twenty-five nights are over, what follows it is fifth. Ibn Khallad said: Instead of the word Yahliqan (contending), he said Yakhtasiman, (they are disputing). (Sahih Muslim)
