ESPITE two decades in
the music industry, folk
singer Kate Rusby still
maintains an almost child
like enthusiasm for
performing to live
audiences.
“Of course I enjoy playing live, I
honestly believe that you just couldn't do
it if you didn't enjoy it!” said Kate, who
also boasts her own record company,
Pure Records.
A much admired performer, from fans
and critics, and even those who wouldn’t
rate her kind of music as their thing, Kate
modestly puts this down to luck and the
media’s continued interest in the folk
scene.
English folk music sees emerging
artists and fresh new talent all the time
and Kate couldn’t be happier.
“Folk music is kinda cool again which
is absolutely great, it is safe and will
continue going forwards,” said Kate, who
performs at Llandudno’s Venue Cymru
next month.
“It has to keep evolving as each
generation make it their own, or it will
become stagnant and only fit for a
museum, that's why I love it when you
get the crossover indie-folk and the like,
it keeps the scene fresh and on its toes.
“It makes for a colourful and vibrant
scene that we are all lucky to have.”
Crediting her parents as her major
musical influences, she was raised in a
very musical household and was “picking
up songs from the word go.”
Previous albums have given home to
only a small number of original songs by
Kate, with cover tracks being a primary
focus. It is this most recent album that
has been entirely self composed and has
been terrifically received.
Having done a great deal of writing
whilst awaiting the birth of her daughter,
she felt it was the right time, if ever there
was one, to finally put some faith in to
her own melodies. While she admits it
was a scary time for her, she maintains
it’s made her that little bit braver; “you
just have to have faith, and be happy
with it yourself, then its only yourself
you have to answer to.”
Bringing in a new band behind her
allowed to keep the music sounding fresh
and they were also free to experiment,
which Kate says “keeps you on your
toes,” and not always stuck approaching a
song in the same manner.
As for plans for the future, Kate is in
the middle of recording a Christmas
album featuring local carols from South
Yorkshire, on top of their traditional
Christmas tour with a brass quintent.
Together with a 20-year celebration
coming up next year and plenty of
touring in between, Kate is showing no
signs of slowing down anytime soon.
So what advice would she offer to
people wanting to get in to the music
industry? “Be humble, kind and retain all
the rights to your music.”

THE award-winning Janet Bell
Gallery in Beaumaris has unveiled its
latest exhibition of ceramic wares
from Australian-born artist, Lincoln
Kirby-Bell.
Lincoln has designed a collection

around the concept of vessels or
objects that can be used to eat and
drink from or contain something,

either bold black and white or with
an exuberant use of colours.
Gallery owner Janet Bell said: “I
am thrilled that Lincoln’s exhibition
has come to Beaumaris because this
is the first time he’s ever exhibited in
Wales, so this is a real coup for
Anglesey.

He added: “Myself and Al have been
toying with the idea of creating a
