Staying Sane With Social Media for Individuals

  1. What is social media? How does social media fit with your organization’s current work? How can you get started? What can you do today?Before we jump into the presentation I would like to get a sense of who is here today…click the control panel to raise your hand if you are:1) an executive director/or marketing director/leader in a nonprofit2) board member3) volunteer4) marketing staff person5) fundraising6) donor and/or supporter
  2. That means you LISTEN, you RESPOND…it’s a conversation, not a billboard for announcements or a place to broadcast!2.In this aspect, it’s no different form any other kind of communication. 3. Do you remember learning to ride a bike? Remember how much time that took? It also required a lot of trust in the people teaching you. You did it right. Social media is no different, it takes time to learn, time to implement and time to keep going. It also takes a lot of time to gain the trust of your community to become established as a thought leader.4. Let’s face it, If you have not tried social media yet, YOU WILL…Other nonprofits such as the American Red Cross and the Animal Humane society have been using social media successfully…after today you will too…

This is one of my favorite images to break down social media – as you see it refers to the social web – which is important to understand that social media is really about making the internet and our digital communications more interactive and many many things are “social” As you can see things like google, online musis, gaming are all social After looking at this how many of you are using social media in some form?Let’s break this down a little and look at some commonly used social tools

Blogs – allow users to easily publish and share content, blogs have allowed everyone to take on the role of creator and publisher – they allow for websites to be updated and interactive on a constant basis with the click of a button.Microblogs – Allow users to post short messages, typically 140 characters- real time – this is important – and to understand that it is a wide open channel – anyone can look in at what you are “publishing”Video sharing – Allows users to post video content for others to watch and sharePhoto sharing – allows users to publicly share photos

Bookmarking – Social bookmarking is a way to store and share links, resources, articles online with others and also have quick access for future reference.Location services – Allowing people to checkin and share there whereabouts with others. Foursquare and Facebook places are the two most used right now – but in the next few years you will see growth and perhaps a few more major players.Online communities – Social networks focused on a specific audience topic - so a community within your social network. They can be private – where you need membership or public like nptalkSocial networks – Allow users to build and maintain relationships – you join and become members and can select who you want to be a closer part of your network
  6. Cart before the horse…It’s easy to jump into these tools – try everything out set up a facebook page and twitter account because everyone is there – but it is just as important to build some strategy around your online social presence. Without some basic strategy how will you know what your goals are, if you have been successful etc.
  7. First of all do not be afraid of experimenting…step out and try it…you can’t break it and dipping your toe in and listening to what is going on around you is ok. Commit to learning one channel and spend the time to learn it.
  8. Take small steps – when you look at everything that is out there it can be overwhelming – start by realizing that you are already using social media just by being online and take little steps.
  9. Here are a few things you can do right now, as soon as this session is over: First, start listening. You probably already have a few blogs or websites you know you visit every day, and you can subscribe to them via RSS. You can set up Google Alerts. You can even set up your listening dashboard. The first two will only take a few minutes, the dashboard will take longer though. Maybe a good Friday afternoon project!
  10. One of the first things we do at SocialNicole when working with a new client is to create a survey to question the current stakeholders about how they view the organizations brand and messaging, how they prefer to connect and where they “hang out” online.This is pretty simple and something you can do yourself without spending a lot of time. You can create a simple list of broad and open questions and you can use a free online survey tool like survey monkey to create the survey. You can email the link to your current stakeholders which should include employees, supporters and members or recipients.This is such a simple process but you may be surprised by all the great ideas that will be handed over to you. This will most likely provide you with a great base for building your strategy and helping you get started.
  11. LoriOf course you can stay sane…choose what you do, when you do it and schedule some time to do…and engage others in helping you do it. If you are doing it alone…it’s not working.
