What AreTwitter Direct Messages

Twitter direct messages, also known as DM's are private messages you can send to your
Twitter followers. People who you follow can also send you a message, but you cannot
send a message to someone who is not following you.



Your Direct Messages List
Twitter shows your 100 most recent messages. The older messages are not deleted but
stored in Twitter’s database.



Deleting Direct Messages

Twitter direct messages once deleted by either the sender or recipient will disappear
from both inboxes (I wish Facebook updates worked like this).



Automating Direct Messages
A very common practice for many Twitter users, especially those with a business or
product to sell is to set up auto direct messages.

We've chosen 2 tools that we consider to be very good and not just for automating
direct messages, but also because they each offer other very useful functionality.

1. Use the navigation menu and go to Social Accounts
> Add New Account > Add Twitter. Be sure to log into
your desired Twitter account beforehand and Authorize

Tools To Automate Twitter Direct Messages

1. Download and install the Tweet Adder application onto your
computer. When the installation is complete, launch the
software.

2. Enter your Twitter username and password to log in to the
application. Click on the "Open User" toolbar button and select
your Twitter username.

3. Click the "Other Messages" link, which is located in the
"Messages" pane on the left side of the screen. The "Send
Direct Messages" screen will appear.

4. Type your personal message into the direct message text
field. Tweet Adder limits you to 140 characters. When you are
finished typing your message, click the "Add" button.

5. Enter an amount of followers in the "# to send" box. Due to
Twitter's direct messaging restrictions, Tweet Adder will not
send more than 250 direct messages in a 24-hour period.
Click the "Start" button to send your personal message to your

Automated Direct Messages: Best Practices
The following will ensure that you keep your new followers once they receive your

1 Don’t try to sell new followers anything in your welcome DM. Period..

2 Don’t try to get your new followers to sign up for your mailing list—this
includes trying to tempt them with a free gift

3 Direct messages without links are seen as more trustworthy and can open
the door to further communication..
