I have analysed the album artwork for Passion Pit's 'Gossamer' by using Lacey's Repertoire of Elements, and other media theorists, to be able to use Angelakos's style to create my own music digipack and CD artwork.
1. CD DigipackAnalysis
'Gossamer'- PassionPit
Genre elements Conventions
Characters – A heterosexual couple
Body language- hands to the air, towards the sun
Extremely closephysicality suggests affection
Man seems to be leadingthe dance which is stereotypical butno real stereotypes
shown.
The albumartwork is extremely simplified to get across thetheme of love; there
are no stereotypes or, no complicated representations, the characters arenot
portrayed by stars or have typical attractivetraits.Nothingis necessary except for
the couple and how they feel.
Narrative events– Appears to be a couple dancingtogether on a sunny day - nothingfractured or
difficultto comprehend, a simplenarrative. This action and the colour of the sky
tells us that they are in love.
Iconography – Symbolic use of the colour pink.It carries associations with love, beauty,
tenderness, and romance. These areall included within the albumand are typical
of the indiegenre. Passion Pit,in the artwork for 'Gossamer' have used extremely
simplesymbolic codes.Indieartists often try to be deep and complex, whereas
others use simplicity to open a world of meaning. As Steve Neale says,"genres are
instances of repetition and difference."
Setting- mise enscene Outside, in the brightsun on a field, sky edited pink.
Extremely simple- abstract, love is nota complex thing, the setting doesn't matter
to the characters or the theme that the artistis tryingto get across.
Technical and audio
codes–
Long shot of the sky and the sun to display happiness
Medium two shot from a low angle gives spotlightto the characters and the
relationship between them
Natural lightingof the sun edited to give a strong pink glow to create an
atmosphere full of love and suggestive of romance
Rule of thirds - the front page is mainly a shotof the sky, the artistname is across
the top and the albumtitle 'Gossamer' is written in the top right corner. Couple
visiblefrom the shoulders up to give emphasis to their hands reachingfor the sun.
Guttenberg Design Principle- Artist name is the primary optical area and, across
the axis of orientation, the albumname in the strong fallowarea of the cover.
Back cover - Songs are listed in small typography in the primary optical area of the
cover where they only take up a small percentage of the whole. The barcodeand
record label is underneath this to keep everything compact, neat, and balanced so
as not to spoil theeffect of the key signifier.
