My heart continues to be moved deeply by our Change Agent work. We have completed
another year - our 9th - of bringing COC Education to some of the most challenged
environments in our Society. I am in AWE of the results we are experiencing; so many seeds are
sprouting and watering other seeds in the process. An awakened individual understands
that he/she has so many more options than choosing a life of crime and destruction. I see so
much potential; the ﬁre is burning in me/us to do so much more.
I am aware that we would have achieved nothing without the incredible commitment of men
and women who dedicated themselves wholeheartedly to this path. We know that it is not an
easy one! My gratitude goes to each of you for having had the courage to choose YOU, for
investing in becoming your best version. Life tests us over and over again so that we may
purify our intentions and strip off all the layers of past limitations. Consciousness is a daily
GYM. There is nothing more attractive than someone who radiates values-based leadership
and generously shares of their awakening. This is the true Magic of a Change Agent.

OUR VISION
IN ACTION…
1. We facilitate CIRCLES OF CHANGE (COC) in highly challenged South African
communities establishing a foundation for development with our personal values-based
leadership program: THE RESPONSIBLE INDIVIDUAL (TRI).
2. We educate CHANGE AGENTS who facilitate dynamic COC processes within their
communities which include: prisons, families, schools, youth at risk, businesses and
organisations – in society at large.
3. Our CHANGE AGENTS are ROLE MODELS who also assist the important phase of Re-
Integration, reducing the recidivism rate by helping parolees to build the bridge back into
society, back home into their families and communities.
4. We are an EMPOWERMENT ARM for our beneficiaries, their families and
communities. We do not do it for them. We do it with them. ”Give a man a fish and you feed
him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” The COC empowers the
journey of each student towards sustainable livelihood, operating in an Abundant
Exchange.
5. We strongly believe in SUSTAINABILITY and that everything brought to a community
must be able to stay and be nurtured within the community for continuous learning and
growth.

In our Circles of Sharing in 2016/17 the guys were brought together in a space of
trust. They have been challenging themselves to own up to their responsibility,
discovering their true worth and unique potential.. and they have found a way
forward together.
MOVING FROM THE KNOWN TO THE UNKNOWN
It is a constant battle not to reveal who we truly are, we keep hiding under our
masks. The greatest gift in our Circles of Sharing has been the ‘unmasking’. I have
as a TRI facilitator build a bridge of understanding with my peers. I have met the
peers where they were at. It wasn’t always easy; at times it was very painful and I
would even feel to give up; but every session was meaningful and a gift. I have
learned the depth of empathy with all my being. I have lived my word and walked
my talk, being who I am - non judgmental and kind.

With deep empathy in my soul, a trusting heart and a
commitment to change our Circles of Sharing have
become a platform of honesty and vulnerability. This is
where hardened criminals let go of their fear of
becoming criticized or judged. They have learned to stop being the
victim and blaming others, stopped jumping to conclusions and
stopped over-reacting, using anger to control others.
In this space of trust and love, they started to feel and hear
that they are not alone; that most of us can relate and
experience similar challenges. In jail it is commonly said that
honesty and transparency makes us too vulnerable. And
that it is not normal nor a good thing. Yet it is the most
valuable opportunity for self discovery, a lesson many of us
have learned through the SmilingOne Program. Here we go
to the root of our challenges (emotions) using our TRI
manual as a tool. With the guidance and the sharing of
others we re-evaluate and shape a new mindset.
The Program attracted a diverse group of individuals; young, old,
people from different races, cultures, backgrounds and crimes. Yet
with the common label of being inmates, conﬁned within the four
walls; set as a limitation to their freedom but not to their potential.
For many crime is a way of expressing their hurt, desperation, pain,
rejection, greed, spiritual and emotional poverty. Most of them never
had the opportunity to sit down and talk openly about their
challenges. They thought it would be best to suppress their feelings.
Fearful of being criticized or judged or even hurt they do not
confront or disagree with others; they take on the opinions of others
and their likes/dislikes. They have become accustomed to who they
are really not; now they are lost and escaping
from their burdens by seeking ‘the quick ﬁx’…
more deeply resisting to love themselves.
They have learned they cannot trust others
with their feelings - they have bottled up
them up, still unresolved.
In our journey of 2016/17 some of the peers
have fallen back into the old ways/patterns,
some have been reunited with their families,
some have made a huge progress in their
educational career, some have started to value the little things in
their life. It all started with a little introspecting, by giving themselves
the opportunity to discover more of themselves and choosing to
actively participate, opening themselves to embrace the invitation
life sends in a challenging scenario.

Some students have started to realize that
SmilingOne only offers a Guideline; it is a ‘do it
yourself’ toolkit. The student is the only one
who can take himself beyond his limitations. As
we continued to inspire each other this year, we
also came to understand that some people will
hurt and discourage us… and that it is OK. Still
love them and appreciate yourself. People will
not always see our motives as pure - be you and
transparent all the time. Honesty and openness
will make us vulnerable - be open and honest
anyway..
As a facilitator I can relate to the many challenges of my peers -
rehabilitation starts with myself. Also I needed a little assistance from
others to ﬁnd my way back to myself again. It was that unconditional
love, support and trust from Karina which opened me to my
potential to self love, self respect and self leadership. Her
unwavering faith to plant a seed of change in my life has contributed
to me teaching myself and enabled me to teach others. It took many
years to walk the talk and it is still a challenge.. but now I can see the
gifts of love and happiness in these challenges. Within these four
walls of the prison have I discovered my meaning in life. I have left
my armor behind and found great strength in being vulnerable.
I have started to see jail as a ‘safe’ where
many valuable gift are ‘kept safe’.
Someone once took the risk to open the
safe and found me as valuable. Now I am
doing exactly the same and unlocking potential. In our
circles there are great jewels; loving fathers, caring
brothers, entrepreneurs, visionaries and beautiful souls.
You took the risk to move from the known to the
unknown. We meet to share ideas, feelings and matters
of the heart. It has given us the opportunity to use our
gifts to heal ourselves and in turn assist each other. The
circles of sharing have opened our hearts to the love
inside, our ears to valuable opinions of each other, and it
has opened us to act with humbleness and compassion towards the
next one.
We have turned the ME into valuing WE in 2016/17 - we have grown
to become what we are and what we live out every single day and
understand that every single part of that journey had an impact. And
for this reason we learn to embrace it as unique and purposeful.
We are on an incredible journey…

A truly special day of celebrating Men who have journeyed deeply with the
SmilingOne TRI Facilitator Team the past year(s) - graduation means
commitment to self and to the greater good - serving through our own living
examples. We all own a share in the well-being of our Society. Graduation
also means... I have just begun... Now starts the real work... to take my
learning into daily action, practicing the TRI toolbox.
SmilingOne has for the past 9 years offered TRI in Western Cape Prisons via
our COC College as a very important ingredient in Rehabilitation and
Reintegration. We educate Change Agents.
6 GRADUATES

Objective 2017/18: We offer our Services in 3 Western Cape Prisons
We continue to offer our services at Malmesbury Prison where we are investing in two existing Change
Agents and opening a space for two more to enter into coach educational training.
We have closed down our prison process at Worcester Prison due to the centre being turned into a
remand centre beginning of 2017. We give thanks for the amazing years of walking hand and hand with
this centre.
We are excited to bring TRI and C.O.C. Education back to Brandvlei Prison - where it all started. We are
also reviving our Pollsmoor Prison process.
We value our partnership with DCS…
We welcome 100 committed inmates to train in our SmilingOne COC College.
The evidence of C.O.C. Education is to be found in…
1) how each Student lives into the learning, allowing his/her ‘seed to sprout’ and moving into its full
expression
2) how each Student passes on the learning as a Role Model, ‘watering the seed’ in his/her family and
community.

In 2016/17 we have assisted 10 parolees
& ex-parolees as they have continued their TRI
& C.O.C. studies with SmilingOne.
Their C.O.C. Educational focuses:
1) an opportunity to deepen their ‘Sharing’
Practice in weekly TRI sessions
2) exploring their ‘Caring’ Practices and
contributing to 5 Community Projects: our
Prisons Project, Phumzile’s Khayelitsha
Project; Franklin’s CMD Project; Fabio’s
Belhar Project; Welcome’s Hout Bay Project
and being of service in their communities.
3) exploring their ‘Resource’ Entrepreneurial
Practice, inspired to ﬁnd further study and
income opportunity. We have through
sponsorships offered 4 of the 10 Parolees
income directly via SmilingOne.
Objective 201718:  
We continue to offer an educational platform
for successful reintegration of parolees who
have studied with us already inside prison. We
increase our efforts by 20%

PHUMZILE SALELA | KHAYELITSHA PROJECT
Phumzile has offered his Change Agent
service in his Khayelitsha community and
is one of the parolees we have assisted
with a monthly remuneration as a
sustainable livelihood practice. His
activities:
1) 4 months in weekly session with
Abigail’s Women’s Movement (6 -10
women attending)
2) offering weekly sessions to 6youth
from Kwezi Park
3) offering weekly sessions to a group
of Cleaners
4) ZOLA Business School with 18
Students
5) offering weekly sessions to youth &
families in his community

OUR PORTFOLIOS
It all started when I was in Worcester prison, I was looking to find myself and my calling. I met The Responsible Individual (TRI) facilitators. I took
on the process which guided me to understand myself and to embrace challenges. The journey allowed me to find my calling.
Inside prison I worked with the likes of Collin Duda, Daniel Davids, Luyanda Mboniswa, Marco Simons, Thando Gwampi - all TRI Facilitators who
were part of facilitating SmilingOne’s C.O.C. Education.
When I reintegrated The SmilingOne Foundation was there for me again. They created a platform for me to follow my heart and to answer my
calling. I am now over one year outside and I am still under the wing of SmilingOne. My first intention was to touch as many people I can with
TRI.
Each and every step I take SmilingOne always is there to support me with anything I need for my journey. Especially in my inner development
practice. SmilingOne guided me to create a platform to plant a seed of great intention within other people. In my journey the past year I have
also worked with fellow Change Agents such as Franklin Esau, Malcolm Booysen and Welcome Dennis Witbooi. I work in my Khayelithsa
community adding my unique ingredients to the development of our community.
Hand in hand with SmilingOne we create programs that help us in the community to combat crime; we water the seeds that we have planted.
Now I feel free like a bird in the tree, knowing that I can do anything I want as long I trust myself and the way I do things. I thank The SmilingOne
Foundation for creating a platform for me to follow my heart. My journey continues…
OBJECTIVE 2017/18: Phumzile steps into leading our Parolee Support portfolio - offering support
of fellow TRI Students (ex-offenders) who are reintegrating. He continues to touch his community and
work with minimum 50 youth and community members. His Khayelitsha Project receives a funding
injection from The DG Murray Trust for his contribution to building ‘Game Changers’.

FRANKLIN ESAU | TRI & C.O.C. FACILITATION
C.O.C. Education is meant to assist the Change Agent in unlocking his potential. TRI Facilitation is
one of the C.O.C. educational KEYS in ‘the unlocking’ and a wonderful vehicle to awaken to so
much more of ourselves. Each client in the process becomes our greatest mirrors and mentors. In
2016/17 Franklin gained much greater clarity on his way forward, he has a deep passion for music
and wants to use music as a platform to unlock potential. He is TRI ALIVE.
The different ingredients that assisted his growth this year was:
- Weekly TRI sessions, Chestnut Group, Belhar (3 months | 10 sessions)
- Weekly TRI sessions and recordings with CMD youth (12 months | 40 sessions)

The Project House was an investment in
Franklin and his COC Education after having
journeyed with him since 2009.
Franklin moved into the downstairs apartment
on Douglas Road 22 on May 1st 2016.
Upstairs he had the ofﬁce space and an
opportunity to host fellow change agents in
sessions for parolee support, to give more
space for the CMD project and have CMD
youth come both for session and recording of
songs. It also served as a venue for Wynberg
High where Franklin did a four months trial
process of our Senior High School Program.
The Project House became a catalyst for
Franklin to step more fully into his Resource
Practice and to choose to do music 100%
from 2017. We are so excited about his choice
to follow his heart and live his dream!

CMD PROJECT
We have had an amazing year in our
development and growth. I am feeling
honored and give my gratitude to each
participant for being so dedicated and
committed to their journey.
In the past year 2016 we have seen
performances, sessions and recordings being
made in the CMD Project. Furthermore Latoya
passed her matric; Byron started creating
back-tracks and Steven, Paul, Lucian and
Rachel have started their working careers.

We have also been contacted by a teacher at the Mount View High School who has requested that CMD becomes involved in her musical
project at the High School. This has raised our participants from 7 to 19 in 2016.
We started working with various studios and record producers, giving the guys an amazing experience in learning more about the recording
process in studios. This led to further songs being recorded and a well connected network being established.
A huge opportunity arose when we performed at the Community Chest Event. The guys were hyped and we had an amazing time -
showcasing our skill and enjoying our access to the event. We thank Making Waves for their gift of inviting us.
At the last bend of our annum we partnered with Mount View High School and their musical program. We have 12 kids from the
school - all senior learners participating in our CMD Project. We have started with sessions right from the beginning which made the learners
really excited about the new concepts.
CMD has been through a special year. We have seen new skills being realized. The guys are rising above responsibility by playing an
active role in contributing to their development. The team understands what they have to put in CMD in order to see results, thus we
came to focus more in depth on CMD by developing more artists and setting up more understandable goals.
Objectives 2017/18: Performing at events which gives CMD youth experience, allows us to gain exposure and build a
network. Growing our muscles and gaining experience in school projects - currently in a trial phase. Planning to have an
ongoing process with opens doors for more participants. Take CMD youth through practical experience such as writing songs
and going to recording studios. Having our own manuals, we are working on a more structural approach. Work towards
fundraising.

We have followed Welcome’s Change Agent activities for a
long time. He is one of our ﬁrst 8 TRI Pioneers who trained with
us from day one at Brandvlei Maximum Prison.
Objective 2017/18:
We are very excited about
Welcome’s Junior Mentors
Leadership Program initiative in
Hout Bay and have included it in our ‘Game Changer’ Portfolio
sponsored by The DG Murray Trust. Welcome is ‘upping his
game’ on TRI and going back into C.O.C. Education;10-15
Junior Mentors will be enjoying weekly TRI sessions throughout
2017, bi-weekly supervision sessions and visits by other
Change Agents as well as other inspiring ingredients to feed
their C.O.C.’s. We look forward to share more as the project
unfolds.

WOMEN & YOUTH SUPPORT
Bukiwe is a young artist/singer whom
we have supported for several years.
2016/17 was a year where her journey
asked her to spread her wings and ﬂy
solo - to fully experience her potential.
- one she is responsible to unlock. We
are very excited about her graduating
her studies at the College of Cape
Town (with a distinction) and she got
accepted at CPUT for Public Relations.
Caroline, mother of two from Masi
has been welcomed into our
SmilingOne Family in 2016/17 - we
are very excited to have assisted her
with her sustainable livelihoods
practice and supported her children
with Stationery for their high school
studies.. She is our house angel and
a true master in cleaning.
Nathalie, young artist and our
inspiring and hard working book
keeper / secretary who in 2017
started her Matric Year. She is a
young woman with many talents - it
has been a gift to support her with
some Change Agent Magic as she
has unlocked more of her potential -
in 2016 she wrote, recorded and
published her own song AS WE ARE.

Franklin unlocked the door for me to follow my dreams no matter how much they scared me.
My mother begged me to sing to Franklin which I did after a lot of thought (I hated singing in front of people at the time). After he had heard my
voice he asked me if I wanted to feature in a song that he had written called VOICES. I agreed. VOICES was the beginning - not only did it give me
the opportunity to be a part of a song, but it also opened the door for me to write my own song AS WE ARE.
It took us long hours of practice to get the tunes, melody, tones and power right in VOICES. Franklin guided me as to how he wanted me to sing
various parts of the song. He also gave me the opportunity to give him advice to certain parts of the song and how I think we could improve on it.
He was very open to my feedback and even took my advice. It took a lot of effort to perfect the song but at the end we got it right and could finally
go to record it as a final piece.
When we went to studio with it I became mesmerized by the song. Ashton Gardner produced it and created the whole backtrack from scratch – he
did his job amazingly. With the backtrack added to the song you could really feel the vibe that the song gave off and it also now had a fantastic
beat. What really stood out for me was the way that my voice sounded on the track – taking into account that this was the first time that I had ever
heard my voice recorded professionally. It was weird, but I liked it. The studio experience was very nerve racking as it is completely different to
singing at home. At home, you are free to play with your voice as much as you want whereas in the studio you can play, but you have to play
perfectly. If your note is slightly off, you can hear it very clearly in the recording. I was very happy with the final recording and was excited to see
what the future held in store for it.
I was also given the opportunity to perform at Malmesbury Prison. At first I was quite uncomfortable when meeting the inmates. But as time went by,
I relaxed. Just by eye-contact with some of them, I could feel their kindness and warmth. That’s when I really got to see that we are all human, we all
make mistakes, some worse than others but none the less, you can’t judge a human and punish them for the rest of their lives. Everyone has the
ability to change. That’s what I truly got to see that day.
Singing in front of all of them was very inspiring for me. I sang ONE DAY by Kodaline acapella. When I started singing and observed the looks on
their faces and I realized that I could not have chosen a more perfect song. The words touched each one of their hearts individually. It moved me.
I don’t think I have ever felt so touched performing in front of others as I did that day performing in front of the inmates at Malmesbury Prison.

We like to shake up things and do them slightly differently - we
enjoyed a scrumptious smoothie party for our team and loyal
supporters twice within the last week of the year - celebrating
another truly special year of team work and incredible
commitment to bringing our special ingredient to more
people. We are nothing without each other! This is what makes
us strong and geared for success. What is success? If you have
inspired just one person to come home in themselves and
become a Shareholder in the Wellbeing of our World you have

Investment in the Change Agent continues to be our focus - 80% of our
funding was directed towards the Change Agent Activities.
We made a big investment in Franklin this year by opening the Project House
where he was also housed. It became an important classroom for us:
1) the willingness to go an extra mile for someone who had invested 7 years in
his personal development and in doing so had contributed to hundreds of
journeys being impacted positively, youth choosing a different path than
crime. We kept the Project House open for 10 inspiring months of great
intention and had to face the reality of the cost. Sponsorships were not
coming through and February 2017 we were at a crossroad.
2) This is another important part of the classroom - to be willing to make some
tough calls. We closed the chapter with a grateful heart and redirected our
focus to deploy the Change Agents in their communities instead of working
out of the Project House. This also catapulted Franklin to step fully into his
music as his Change Agent activity.
Another great investment has been in Phumzile. It is incredible what he has
achieved since his release from prison. The youth in his community call him a
virus - he inspires change wherever he goes and is highly contagious. We are
excited that we have attracted sponsorship from The DG Murray Trust which we
will kickstart the new ﬁnancial year with.

We are very much guided by where the process
takes us, we listen deeply to what meets us and
always give thanks. We deeply appreciate the
sponsors who have walked next to us and
supported our Change Agent Work.
We would like to highlight our long standing
relationship with both RUC and LRMG. Thank you
for the commitment and your willingness to walk
the extra mile with us. The funding injection has
had huge impact for us this year where the donor
landscape has been challenged with drought. It
reminds us to be deeply grateful for what ﬁnds
us. Only once you have experienced to be
hungry will you truly understand and appreciate
what difference a meal can make.
We are geared for our next year and continue to
be vigilant with our expenditure. We walk the
path mindfully.

AS A BOARD we are accountable for our standard of governance and
therefore highly committed to ensure that we deliver what we
promise. It begins with how we live our SmilingOne Dream, walking
the talk and fueling these values into building a strong and
sustainable organisation.
FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT POLICY - the SmilingOne Foundations
ﬁnancial management is done in terms of the South African Auditing
Standards and audited ﬁnancial statements are available. Our
external auditor HG Page (Company Practice No 964700) provide
oversight and monitoring.
QUALITY MANAGEMENT is integrated into the SmilingOne
Foundations management system. Project monitoring and evaluation
is part of our total Quality Management Policy.
OUR CHANGE AGENT COMMITTEE is tasked with monitoring of all
our COC projects. Each project undergoes monthly quality assurance
through comprehensive COC feedback reports from the project as
well an evaluation by the Chair of the Committee.
