- Although most of you already know me, I’d like to introduce myself: I’m Natalia Sastre, I come from Spain, from Universitat Politecnica Valencia. I work as a Head Librarian in a campus library. My visit to Avans University is a part of an International Leadership development programme, for the leaders of tomorrow’s libraries, organized by LIBER ( Association of European Research Libraries)
- A brief description about my University, Universidad Politecnica de Valencia: As you can see in this slide, my University…
- My University has three campuses as your university does.…… The main campus is located in Valencia, where there are 11 schools and an important science park with research institutes, innovation centres, etc. Furthermore there are 2 other campuses: Campus of Alcoy, and my Campus, Campus of Gandia. The Campus of Gandia offers bachelor programmes and master programmes specialized in 4 main areas: Telecommunication, Environmental Science, Tourism and Audiovisual Communication
- My library is located in Gandia, as you have seen, but functionally we depend on Library and Scientific Documentation Area. This area is headed by the Library Director. Four traditional and main areas come under the Manager, each of them is managed by a deputy director. The subarea Learning and Research Services is responsible for the libraries, including my library.
- As I have already said, I’m head librarian about this library, a campus library. My staff consists of only 5 assistant librarians, because the main tasks such as acquisition, cataloguing, e-resources, etc. are centralized in Valencia. Since 2009 we have a new library building created as an Information Commons: a building with a wide variety of spaces and uses
- To introduce the subject of this presentation, I want to show you a definition about what a 2.0 library is. The author is an university librarian, is a colleague of mine and he knows a great deal about 2.0. I like this definition a lot because it highlights 3 important elements: attitudes, tools and social content. ATTITUDES. It is the most important point of this "wheel" because 2.0 implies a clear intention to reach out to users and their contributions in full confidence and believing in the power of the community, known as collective intelligence. A wide variety of 2.0 TOOLS exists, and each library chooses the best fit for its needs and objectives. The social content refers to how the user participates via tags, comments, ratings, etc.
- Gandia Campus Library focuses its efforts on: - COMMUNICATION: contact with users to display collections and services - INFORMATION: reporting news, general information such as timetables, addresses… - SPREADING and promoting information resources, spaces and services to promote their use - TRAINING: we train in classroom sessions, through training materials,… to achieve optimization of the use of the available resources. All these functions are performed with the aim of meeting the information needs of our users We understand this not as a one-way process. Continuous feedback is needed, an exchange of views and information, thus the last element of the circle: INTERACTION
- In our case, starting to plan 2.0 tools we considered important elements such as: - The receptive and staff involvement: This is a fundamental requirement. It’s vital to have a motivated staff, that want to learn, that want to participate in new tools and strategies. And in our case, it was, and still is. - the need for a previous study of 2.0 tools available, their capabilities, their potential uses, and so on. and assessment to suit the goals of our library. Thus, from the wide variety of existing tools 2.0, Gandia Campus Library chose the most appropriate for our goals.
- Uses: To inform To communicate news To talk to (to create conversation) To share content with UPV facebook pages,libraries facebook pages… Through social networks like Facebook and Twitter we advertise activities, services and spread new marketing campaigns such as the current "Posa't al dia (Catch up): weekly training sessions for students“ Now, Facebook allows us to share pictures easily, you can see an example with an album with “The most borrowed books”.
- If you have a facebook page, you can personalize the tabs using facebook apps as Flcikr tab, or youtube tab; or you can create new tabs such as our “te interesa / For you interest” OR “buscar /search” created with HMTL /FMBL. http://wwwhatsnew.com/2011/10/25/de-facebook-y-los-beneficios-para-los-estudiantes-infografia/
- In Twitter, information is presented in real time, and it allows us to establish an updated information channel with the university community. We try to publish tweets not only related to the Library but also with our environment: the Campus of Gandia and the Library and Scientific Documentation Area which we belong to.
- Slideshare is used to publish or make presentations Presentations, lectures, courses, ... made by the Library are uploaded to Slideshare which helps us increase the visibility of our training work, as well as providing useful statistics and social features such as favorites or scores.
- As the Issuu webpage says, Issuu is a tool to collect, share and publish in a format designed to make your documents look their very best. We use Issuu, to show our activity programs and brochures. Issuu is very flexible and easy to reuse: for example we can embed the content on our website. It also offers very complete statistics.
- The training /self-training of our users is one of our basic goals, and one of the current environments of the European Higher Education Area ( EHEA) , too; in which we intend that our users acquire skills related to the competence of management information. To do this, one of the main actions of my library is the Subject guides: list of specialized information resources with quality content and where you can also find information on how to locate electronic resources of the Digital Library in each main subject, and news of the collection. These guides are made with wikis, in 2.0 tool which is very easy to provide feedback and suggestions. Each link is included in Delicious, a social bookmarking service.
- Flickr was the 1st tool used and we had a very clear purpose: to promote the new library space in the new building under construction. We began in February 2007, and after this, through Flickr photos we showed the evolution of the work and created an open atmosphere around it. Currently the content is updated with our activities, such as cultural events, guided tours, new furniture, changes in spaces, etc.. In general Flickr is less used as photo management and sharing application; because social networks as Facebook or Google+ have developed excelent apps for picture and videos.
- 2.0 tools allow us to approach users in a more personal, more attractive way using formats and applications that users are already familiar with, for example youtube. As regards the new building, we made promotional videos to show the new facilities. Politube is our own youtube, a platform where UPV users can upload, browse and use videos made by teachers, services, etc. We would like to do more videos but we don’t have enough specialized staff.
- Google tools like Google Calendar are used to indicate schedules times and events of the Library or Google Maps that have helped us to "Geolocate“ our library (in fact today the building does not appear on the site, it only shows our position) We also use a Really Simple Syndication (RSS) news related to our website RSS (originally RDF Site Summary , often dubbed Really Simple Syndication ) is a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently updated works—such as blog entries, news headlines, audio, and video—in a standardized format
- For 2.0 Communication channels we require a constant recycling for our team: Tools are updated, they allow customization of applications and furthermore we discover/evaluate new tools … Our users use 2.0 Web to interact with their friends, and Gandia Campus Library also want to be there, in a more informal way but also wants to spread, communicate, inform, and train, Create community: We are interested in their views and comments, we need their feedback to improve and refocus our services and collections.
