Task 4: Look at the text, copy it into your book and write the
correct words.

In Victorian times the (secondary/ragged) schools were

started for children who came from very (rich/poor) families.

Teachers wrote on a (blueboard/blackboard) with

(cheese/chalk). The teachers were very (happy/strict) and

used to hit the children with a (flower/cane). Children used an

(calculator/abacus) to count.



They sat in (metal/wooden) desks. They used a (iPad/slate) to

write on with a (slate/coloured) pencil. They also used a dip

(finger/pen) with an ink well. If a child did not sit up straight

they would have to sit with a (back/foot) straighter. Children

who could not keep their hands still had to wear (ear/finger)

cuffs. Left handed children were made to wear finger cuffs to

make them write with their right hand.
