2. ABOUT
Giorgio Armani is an Italian fashion designer, particularly noted for his menswear.
He is known today for his clean, tailored lines. He formed his company, Armani, in
1975. Soon after by 2001, he was claimed to be one of the most successful fashion
designer. He is credited with pioneering red-carpet fashion.
Armani was born in the northern Italian town of Piacenza, where he was raised with
older brother Sergio and younger sister Rosanna by his mother Maria Raimondi and
father Ugo Armani.
Armani’s childhood dream was to be a doctor. In the 1950s, he attended medical
school, but had to leave for two years for the military. There, he worked in the
hospital, where he realized that he did not want to be a doctor. After the army, he
went to work in a department store in Milan called La Rinascente. He worked
primarily in the menswear department, gaining experience. He floated from store to
store through the 1970s. Around1973, he began doing freelance design work for
fashion houses, and his work was so impressive that he was featured in Florence
runway show.
3. In 1974 Giorgio Armani held his first show in his name where his menswear collection
of informal fashion blazers were presented. In 1975 Giorgio Armani launched his own
fashion label with ready to wear women’s wear and Armani junior, his children’s line.
In 1979 he started his “Mani” collection for less expensive wear for woman, and “Le i
Collezione”, his menswear collection for men. During the same year Armani designed
clothes for actor Richard Gere, where Gere starred in o the movie “American Gigolo”
in which Armani’s designs were implemented into.
Giorgio Armani was counted as one of the top leading fashion houses’ by the end of
the decade. Armani’s friend and enthusiastic partner Sergio Galeotti died from cancer
in 1985, leaving Armani his 50% interest in the firm, as well as to take total control of
both the design and business aspects of his fashion empire. Armani expanded into a
range of different sectors like lifestyle, cosmetics, sportswear, food and dining
(Armani Caffé and Armani Dolci), the automobile industry (in collaboration
with Mercedes Benz) and even the hotel business, and the Giorgio Armani fashion
house became internationally renowned as a symbol of Italian luxury.
The decade was known for it’s a designer jeans, Armani launched Emporio Armani in
1981 which was a designer jean line, which was a lower price version of the flagship
line. . This new embodiment of the fashion house as prestigious and elite pushed the
brand to launch an haute-couture line, Armani Privé.
4. In 1975, Giorgio Armani introduced his first menswear pieces: supple bomber jackets
made from leather treated like cloth.
