8. Europe’s ‘ Passiv Haus’ (P.H.) Standard A Passive House is any building in which a comfortable interior climate can be maintained without active heating and cooling systems (Adamson, 1987, and Feist, 1988). The building heats and cools itself, hence passive...

Two notes The numbers vary depending on which statistics you are reading but one thing remains consistent, Buildings represent the larger portion of the energy used. California is an exception to the rule in that we spend more energy pumping water.
So what is a Passive house…
Note the small solar panel on the roof, Passive design doesn’t need a lot of power.
Thermal bridges
Solar air conditioning with better quality air than any HVAC available today. The riser cap could come up in a bed of your favorite herbs for whole house aroma therapy You ever wonder why dogs dig a whole and lays in it on hot days, the ground is always about 55-58 degrees within a few feet of the surface.
Latest reports have shown they now have 20,000 homes built to Passive standard…the revolution is moving forward
Looks like any other typical commercial building but uses zero energy for heating and cooling
These glass panels are solar collectors, and since the church requires little energy it is a net producer of power. Here we struggle with simply zeroing out our electrical bill with solar on houses that consume huge amounts of electricity and gas for heating and cooling.
Even the lighting bills can be reduced substantially with passive design…have you ever seen the lighting bill in any commercial building?
Sanyo bi-facial panels which produce up to an additional 30 % from the backside making them one of the most efficient panels available today. These panels are glazed in place as to be a water tight roof, with ventilation windows mounted on the vertical portion for ventilation
Tell the story
Anyone know the Euro conversion rate? These numbers are euro dollars per square foot but the important part is there is only a total of 5.6% cost increase upfront to build to passive standard.
Retrofitting existing buildings is at the forefront of passive design…especially here in Ojai where getting permission to build new homes is harder than winning at the lottery. Retrofitting has a return on investment of 3-5 years…can you think of anything else we could invest money into and see all of your investment dollars come back to you in savings in as little as 3-5 years. Retrofitting your home is probably the single safest place for anyone to invest money with a guaranteed rate of return, safer than any stock market or real estate investment. Commercial buildings too, businesses could increase their profit margin in just a matter of years by reducing their energy bills.
Everyone of us owes it to our kids to provide the healthiest and safest environments for schools. To give them any less compromises their ability to learn
No building project is too big or too old to retrofit to passive design
Some people say to me but we can not afford to retrofit to passive design…with a payback in one year, I would go so far as to say we can not afford not to retrofit all buildings to passive design. Keeping buildings the way they are is the most expensive option available.
Two and a half times more efficient. We can not afford the energy to keep building the way we have been doing, in fact it should be illegal to build as we do today.
