36. The Droste effect is a specific kind of recursive picture, one that
in heraldry is termed mise en abyme. An image exhibiting the
Droste effect depicts a smaller version of itself in a place where a
similar picture would realistically be expected to appear. This
smaller version then depicts an even smaller version of itself in
the same place, and so on. Only in theory could this go on forever;
practically, it continues only as long as the resolution of the
picture allows, which is relatively short, since each
iteration geometrically reduces the picture's size. It is a visual
example of a strange loop, a self-referential system of
instancing which is the cornerstone of fractal geometry.
80. 10.Name the product
The shape of this product is modelled
after a hyperbolic paraboloid.
This design characteristic is beneficial as
it helps keep the product from breaking
during distribution by eliminating lines of
stress along which a small crack may
easily propagate. Further, it keeps a stack
of the product tightly interlocked or
nested during distribution.
The name of the product came from a
street in Cincinnati. The name was
chosen simply for its sound and appeal.
84. 1.
The engine has two pistons. The difference in the engine is that the
crankshaft has only one pin, and both pistons connect to it. This
design, combined with the V arrangement of the cylinders, means
that the pistons cannot fire at even intervals. Instead of one piston
firing every 360 degrees, the engine goes like this:
A piston fires.
The next piston fires at 315 degrees.
There is a 405-degree gap.
A piston fires.
The next piston fires at 315 degrees.
There is a 405-degree gap.
And the cycle continues.

93. 4.Charles H. Duell
resigned from his post in
1899. Although most of
us may not remember
him, we know the reason
he gave for his
resignation. The reason
was dependant on the job
that he did before
resigning. What was the
reason he gave (which is
now quoted widely)?
105. X advised ten presidents from Harry S. Truman to Bill Clinton on nuclear
policy and was the chairman of the United States Atomic Energy
Commission from 1961 to 1971 where he pushed for commercial nuclear
energy and peaceful applications of nuclear science.
After sharing the 1951 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Edwin McMillan, he
received approximately 50 honorary doctorates and numerous
other awards and honors. The list of things named after X ranges from his
atomic element to an asteroid. X was a prolific author, penning more than
50 books and 500 journal articles, often in collaboration with others. He
received so many awards and honors that he was once listed in the
Guinness Book of World Records as the person with the longest entry
in Who's Who in America.

108. 9. Inventions, and discoveries
1910: The _______-1910, an experimental aircraft constructed for air-
reactive propulsion
1911: An aircraft powered by two engines driving a single propeller - the
configuration cancelled the torque of the engines. He invented a new
decorative material for use in construction, beton-bois; one prominent
example of its use is the Palace of Culture, in Iaşi.
1926: Working in Romania, _______ developed a device to detect liquids
under ground, useful in petroleum prospecting. Shortly thereafter, in
the Persian Gulf region, he designed a system for offshore oil drilling.
Probably the most famous of his discoveries is the ”______ Effect”. After
more than 20 years studying this phenomenon along with his
colleagues, he described what Albert Metral was later to name the
“______ Effect".
This effect has been utilized in many aeronautical inventions.
A modular system of sea water desalination and transformation to fresh
water, based on solar energy, a clean, ecological and adaptable system.
