4. THE NEW ENGLAND JOURNAL OF
MEDICINE
• “symptoms are often accommodated by family or
school, and the affected child may simply avoid
anxiety-provoking situations (avoidant coping).
Such overaccommodation strategies may minimize
the immediate symptoms yet often lead to
increased difficulty in coping with these anxieties
later. For example, a child with marked social
anxiety may well have substantial difficulties
transitioning from elementary school to junior high
school if the problem is not addressed”
• High school to college
6. ADVANCEMENTS
• Publsihed in the New England Journal of Medicine
• 2:New Treatment for Blood Cancers
• Newly-developed drugs called “B-cell receptor pathway
inhibitors” have been highly effective in treating low-grade B-
cell lymphomas and leukemias in clinical trials. A 2013 study
published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM)
showed an overall response rate of 71 percent for patients
with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) who were treated
with the new drugs. These drugs kill malignant B cells while
having little effect on healthy cells, thus producing fewer side
effects than chemotherapy and allowing the patient to
remain healthier during treatment.”

7. ADVANCEMENTS
• 1: Bionic Eyes for Severe Eye Disease
• “Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a group of inherited eye diseases that
affects more than 100,000 Americans and often results in legal
blindness by the age of 40. Backed by two decades of
development and testing, and more than $200 million in
funding, there may now be a treatment for RP. It’s a new FDA-
approved technology that consists of a surgically-implanted 60-
electrode retinal prosthesis which decodes wireless transmissions
from a pair of glasses equipped with a video camera. A video
processing unit must also be worn or carried. The retinal
implant, or “bionic eyes,” don’t completely restore vision;
however, patients can sense light and dark, movement, and the
location of people and objects”

8. MY EXPERIENCE
• Father diagnosed when I was 16
• In and out of the hospital with multiple surgeries
• My view: sad, hard to see my dad in pain. With
differenent medical tools in and out of him.
• Always uncomfortable especially in the waiting
room waiting for the doctor to return after the
surgery
• Stayed the night to give mom and grandmother a
break
9. NEW EXPERIENCE
• Before entered: Vitals taken & wear face mask
• NICU:
• Only saw one more. Many are crack babies
• Lydia .49 pounds, dark hair, tiny, Crack Baby
• Babies out of surgery: bandaids too tiny for
bandages
• Crack baby scream: extremely loud (piercing)
• Nurses constantly busy
10. NEW EXPERIENCE
• PICU:
• Nurses with ribbons: child they were assigned to passed
away. Their next assignment will be more hopeful
• Children with life threating diseases
• Apartment style room (there for a long period of time
and family stays)
• Signs and poster of famous people they look up too
• Patrick McSweeney has Leukamia visited by Jennifer
Lawerence and many more
• Looking into the rooms saw poster of Selena Gomez
Disney Channel Star. Gives them hope and happiness to
look at and remind them they still are kids.
11. NEW EXPERINCE
• PT UNIT:
• A girl was learning how to walk and was there with
her mother
• Feelings: positive, recovery
• Shows me even though uncomfortable all the
postives and healing that is happening in the
hospital
• Reflect: My cousin (6 months at Vandy hospital
premie) recieved radical back surgery and had to
go to PT to learn to walk again
• My future carreer: want to help kids recover
12. NEW EXPERIENCE
• Playroom:
• This room was not uncomfortable for me
• Only one child was in the play room she was
playing with the blocks
• Thoughts: Happy the child can take a break from
being poked at and can play and try to still be a
kid. Feel sad they cannot be at recess playing with
children their own age
