This week's activities focused on kirigami and Japanese family crests or mon. Students learned about traditional Japanese mon designs and how they are used in family crests. They created various kirigami art projects using mon designs, including cutting mon from erasers to use as stamps, folding mon lanterns, and designing mon patterns on fans, glass, cloth, obi sashes, and other goods. One project involved kirigami designs for a dress in Vogue magazine and others were meant for present decoration or decorating bento lunch boxes and candle coasters.
