Film Review - "An Epoch "
1. AN EPOCH-MAKING SPEECH
Review by SWATI JOSHI
Movie : THE KING’S SPEECH
Type : Biographical Period Drama
Director: Tom Hooper
Producers: Iain Canning
Emile Sherman
Gareth Unwin
Geoffrey Rush
Cast : Colin Firth, Helena Bonham Carter,
Geoffrey Rush, Guy Pearce, Michael
Gambon, Timothy Spall, Jennifer
Ehle .
Rating :

Tom Hooper ( the director ) has given a scrupulous attention to the causes of stammering (like psychological fear , hostile nourishment and hesitation) that prevent King George VI ( Colin Firth ) from enunciating sentences correctly with proper pauses. And it is the Queen ( Helena Bonham Carter ) who seeks the help of an Australian speech therapist, Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush) to help her husband with his speech disorder.
The movie that has set an unequalled record of success, begins with Prince Albert, Duke of York ( to-be King George VI ) giving a speech at the close of The British Empire Exhibition at Wembley Stadium. The audience is shocked to find His Royal Highness a stammerer. He tries very hard to overcome his disorder by consulting various physians but it is only then , when he meets Lionel Logue ( the struggling actor ) that he gets assured to find a ray of hope amidst the fog of stutter.
Lionel Logue helps Prince Albert to overcome the mechanical difficulties with his speech. He is aware of the prince’s immense power to be a great king and so gives him a friendly ear in order to help him speak eloquently with proper pauses. He helps the prince realize his potential and develops self confidence within him (Prince Albert).
The running time of the film is 118 minutes , but it leaves an enduringly optimistic impression on the viewers. The screenplay by David Seidler is enthralling and the movie is further seasoned by the cinematography of Danny Cohen. Perhaps it would have been better if Hooper would have used more of Carter’s acting skills. Still she is a woman of great will power and fragile beauty , who is scared more of public responsibilities than to be the wife of the stammerer.
Candidly, it is luck that favours Bertie to succeed the throne , even more than his supportive wife and encouraging friend ; as King Edward VIII ( Guy Pearce ) resigns from the kingship in order to marry Wallis Simpson ( Eve Best ).
******************************************************************
