10. Why does it matter?
There is an increased risk of:
- Falls - Incontinence - Lung infections
- Pressure sores - Thrombosis - Depression
Sources: âKortebein et al, 2008 and âStayingActive While in Hospitalâ report from Better Health, Victoria, Australia
10 days in bed ages muscles by 10 years for
those over 75 years old.
Up to 50% of older patients become
incontinent within 24 hours of admission.
!
!
Poorer clinical outcomes
Longer hospital stays
More care needed afterwards
Increased likelihood of re-hospitalisation

âWe know that if patients stay in their
pyjamas or gowns for longer than they need
to, they have a higher risk of infection, lose
mobility, fitness and strength, and stay in
hospital longer.â

âGetting up, dressed and moving could
make the difference between going
home, or to a home.â
"But if we can help patients get back to their
normal routine as quickly as possible including
getting dressed, we can support a quicker
recovery, help patients maintain their
independence & get them home sooner.â

INGA Wellbeing is named after my mother Inga.
Diagnosed with ovarian cancer at 52 years old, I watched my proud, elegant mother lose not only her hair, but her dignity, self-confidence and enjoyment of othersâ company. Cancer threatened to take her life, but the process of being treated for cancer was threatening to take everything that made herâŚwell..her!
Why does this matter?
Too much Bedrest + Institutionalisation = De-conditioning
Patients feel , behave, and become sicker!
they move less
eat less
socialise less
Become passive
Lose confidence
Feel depressed
Well⌠if you feel exposed, are in your pyjamas, or it is awkward/uncomfortable to walk: you stay in bed!
Patients who are hospitalised walk an average of fewer than 900 steps a day. And if you are over 75 and spend 10 days in hospital your muscles are aging by 10 years.
Bedrest leads to decreased bone density, increased risk of bone fracture, greater risk of falling, more pressure sores and increased risk of infection, as well as reduced appetite. Patientsâ breathing, bowel function, equilibrium are all negatively affected.
And if you feel exposed/ in pyjamas: you decline visitors!
An Australian Better health report about the effects of hospitalisation found that loneliness increases the likelihood of mortality by 26%
But even if you want to get dressed in your own clothes â high street clothing â you find you need help âŚfrom nursesâŚ.strangers⌠and are not able to decide when you take a shower or go to bed, or to the loo.
Again, the same report found that Up to 50% of older patients become incontinent within 24 hours of admission.
So clothingâŚ..the right clothing is vital! âŚ
Furthermore, we have found both the UK and Belgian media to be very receptive and have been delighted to get quite a bit of free coverage, including appearing on Kanaal Z news one evening.
