 Def:
A centrifugal pump is a machine that uses rotation to impart velocity to
a liquid and then converts that velocity into flow.

1. Tum off the pump motor.
2. If the pump is to be depressured for maintenance, close valves in
the suction and discharge piping, Open the vent valve, and after
depressuring, open the drain valve.

8. Pump Heads
1. Total Static Head - Total head when the pump is not running
2. Total Dynamic Head (Total System Head) - Total head when the
pump is running
3. Static Suction Head - Head on the suction side, with pump off, if
the head is higher than the pump impeller
4. Static Discharge Head - Head on discharge side of pump with the
pump off
5. Dynamic Suction Head/Lift - Head on suction side of pump with
pump on
6. Dynamic Discharge Head - Head on discharge side of pump with
pump on

 Capacity/Flow—the rate of liquid flow that can be carried,
typically measured in gallons per minute (gpm).

 Pumps can generate high volume flow rates when pumping against
low-pressure head or low volume flow rates when pumping against
high-pressure head.
