2. Verisimilitude
âą Verisimilitude can be defined as the appearance being true or real.
In a narrow sense it can also be defined as the likeness or semblance
of a narrative to reality, or to the truth. It can be described in
storytelling by the way in which the audience contributes to their
experience by their willing acceptance that even when events or
people in a film are not realistic, if the filmmakers vision is
consistent it will then give us the sense that in that particular world
these things can happen. This term is important in many media
genres because it determines the level of an audience engagement
and also their willingness to engage in suspension or disbelief.
3. Example of Verisimilitude
âą An example of verisimilitude can be the film âSupermanâ because in
the film it has realistic plots and images that make the film seem
quite realistic. The marketing of the film suggested âyouâll believe
that a man can fly!â and this is what the audience believed when they
watched the film. The word superman emphasises that the character
has got power so he must be able to fly, and so this felt true and real.
The believability is reinforced due to the fact that his universe
demonstrates no realism and does not attempt to match the real
world.
4. Ideology
âą Ideology is defined as a body of ideas reflecting the social needs and
aspirations of an individual, group, class and culture which can
influence peopleâs beliefs and actions. But audiences can interpret
these ideas differently depending on the individual. The way certain
things and people are shown in films contribute the ways in which
these things are understood and experienced in real life. Choices in
the form within film (mise en scene, editing, sound) convey
particular messages and give impact on viewers, with repetition and
time and these become conventions. These conventions maintain
power in the way things continue to be created and broadcasted.
5. Example of Ideology
Ideologies in Disney
Ideologies brought about in Disney films
is that women are dependent on a man,
finding love and marriage is the ultimate
goal. It also gives the ideology of body
images, because these characters are seen
as commercially beautiful when really
they have body proportions that are not
physically possible, so therefore distorting
societies ideas on body image making
women strive for something that is
humanly not possible.
Ideologies in sex and the city
In the film sex and the city it shows
the ideology of women that have
been changed over time as women
have become more independent and
have no limits on how successful they
can be. However they still reinforce
the dominant ideology of marriage
being the ultimate goal.
